Hi, Tonebase mates! For this week I'd like to present an arrangement of mine. It's from a song called Luiza, written by Tom Jobim. Is a waltz, I hope you appreciate it.

Dale Needles Thank you! This song was born as an instrumental piece for piano. Before finished, Tom Jobim received an ask for a song, for a soap opera. He put the lyrics and Luiza was "promoted" for a song. If you pay attention, the melody is a bit difficult to sing, because was created as an instrumental piece, and not as a song. There are many versions for guitar, that's the mine. Thank you for listening!

Moyses Lopes Thanks for pointing out about the history of the piece. I listened to it again with special attention to the melody. I also listened to the piano version with Jobim playing and singing (amazing!). In any case, I agree that the melody is difficult but so beautiful and you capture it very well both with your playing and arrangement. Congrats!

Well... One waltz, why not another one? This time is an Antonio Lauro waltz, Valsa Venezolana 2. I did a poetic license in part B, let me know what you think. Thank you in advance!

Moyses Lopes I loved that, Moyses! When the tempo picks up, your playing is so impressive. I am not familiar enough with the piece to know what poetic license you took. Is it the rasgueados? If so, I think they're great.

Moyses Lopes Interesting interpretaion and excellent playing. While I am probably more of a purist when comes to interpreting Lauro, your poetic license with the beginning tempo and the rasgueado in the B section worked very well! You made it your own which is great. BRAVO!

Moyses Lopes That was beautiful, Moyses. As noted by others, your performance is impeccable. I didn't notice anything that seemed out of place - a rather uninformed observation.

Eric Phillips Thank you! Yes, the rasgueados are my poetic license, and the slow tempo to introduce the piece. Glad you like it! Thank you for listening!

Moyses Lopes Moyses - I was tempted to put another word in front of this but I'll just say FANTASTIC. I've been learning this for the last week or so - from watching your performance I think I have a long way to go! (I might steal some tricks though :-))

Derek If you steal some tricks I'll get really proud! I've been playing this piece for a long time, and I guess that's the trick that works for me. I need a LONG time maturing a piece, like a good bourbon. Thank you for your kind words!

Moyses Lopes Maybe I should have a good bourbon before doing a recording - it might relax me a little :-)

Sergio Assad - Farewell (another take)
Before I joined Tonebase, I didn't even know who Sergio Assad is. His etudes were the first thing I played after joining Tonebase (I only practiced the first 5 though). I didn't upload them because I didn't know how to record myself at that time. After a few months, I am now enjoying his music and being able to upload videos here, so thank you, Martin & Tonebase.
After one week of practice, I can't say I played better than the last time, fixed some spots I failed to play last time, but got new mistakes elsewhere. Anyway, it's a beautiful piece of music.
