  • Here goes Carlevaro's Preludio Americano #3, better known as "Campo".  It is undoubtedly Carlevaro's most known composition. In keeping with this week's theme of Rhythm Everywhere, this piece has a great rhythm along with a beautiful melody and some interesting harmonies. The middle section is the most challenging with the inversion of the melody and the introduction of the Uruguayan samba rhythm.

      Dale Needles I really enjoyed that, Dale. This is the only Caralevara piece I have ever played (years ago). I considered it for this challenge but my list was ridiculously long and absurdly ambitious. So it (and about 10 other pieces) got cut from the list. I may have to reconsider - or at least revisit it after the challenge.

  • Barrios – País de Abanico (walkthrough of problem areas in the second half)

    This is a long video, so I won't mind if you don't want to watch it. I'm basically talking through some problems I'm having in the second half of this piece. If anyone has any helpful thoughts, I'd love to hear from you. The two things that are particularly troublesome are:

    • Measures 41-44 How can I make the high C note ring clearly?
    • Measures 50-51 Is this as impossible as it seems (as written)? What do you think of my easier version in the video? It's a compromise, but I think it may be a reasonable one.

  • Brouwer - Estudio Sencillo No 1

    Since I'm struggling so much with the Barrios piece above, it helps me to be able to take a break and work on something easier for a bit. So with that in mind, I will be posting some of Brouwer's well-known studies.

    • Blaise Laflamme That would make a great extended challenge, wouldn’t it? Right now, I’m just playing them because of the discussion Martin posted and because they give me more satisfaction than trying to play this very difficult Barrios piece.

      Eric Phillips Sounds great, Eric. I can understand the frustration of a difficult piece and the need to take a break with something less challenging. I should take note! 🤔(not sure that's the right emoji.)
