Ariel Ramirez – Balada Para Martín Fierro

This is from a 1968 Argentinean film called Martín Fierro based on an epic poem by the same name. Fierro is a renegade gaucho, something like an Argentinean cowboy. I find this music to be quite sad and beautiful.

Eric Phillips I really love this piece. Ariel Ramirez is well known for another song, "Alfonsina y El Mar", immortalized in the voice of "La Negra" Mercedes Sosa. In fact, I had plans to post a video with that piece, but now it's absolutely unnecessary, you played so beautifully that I prefer just listening to you. Thank you, Eric!

Eric Phillips Yet another sad, romantic song played beautifully, Eric. I honestly don't know how you can play so many pieces so well. BTW, I am addressing these submissions backwards. I was out of town for a few days and the I got back there is a huge list of submissions. I'm not sure when I can get around to practicing there are so many to address.

Jack Stewart Thanks, Jack. I often go backwards too. There's never any need to listen to or comment on my posts - I will never be upset. I hope you had a pleasant time away.

As you can see, I've reverted to more intermediate level pieces, which explains my higher volume of music than in the Bach challenge (at least so far). I guess I'm a quantity over quality kind of guy! 🙂

Thanks for sharing this with us, Eric! A beautiful, melancholic piece I had never even heard of. You give the impression of having played this for years, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's another example of your ability to master repertoire after a day or two of practice! Either way, a wonderful performance.

David Krupka Thanks, David. I first discovered it maybe a couple years ago in a YT video by Fabio Zanon. I learned it then, but stuck it in one of my giant binders of music. I just pulled it out again a couple days ago with some other Latin American pieces that I’d like to play this month for the challenge. It’s such a great piece, and not too difficult.

Lars Kjøller-Hansen Nice, Lars! Great start, this is a difficult piece, written to the piano. This rhythm is "galopa misionera" from the Misiones region, on the border of Brasil, Argentina and Paraguay. Thank you for sharing!

Hi, friends! Like Eric Phillips I'll post a gaucho piece. 😉 My father used to make me repeat this piece many many times... A bit of him is here, in this recording. From Abel Fleury, Milongueo Del Ayer.
