    Brouwer Pieza sin Titulo #2

Now that my concert performance is over I will devote more time to this challenge.

This (technically) simple piece by Brouwer has its challenge in creating a coherent atmosphere within its very sparse structure. I feel I am still not there. There are a few bobbles and hesitations which are more noticeable in a piece like this.

Jack Stewart An interesting piece Jack and well played, looking forward to the finished product (I never seem to get to that stage!).

Derek Thanks Derek. 'The finished product' is also elusive to me as well.

joosje Thanks Joosje. It was new to me, I found it in a collection of Brouwer's work I recently acquired and thought it was pretty nice.

  • Barrios – Oración (Apr 10 update)

I feel like I have made some progress on this one. It still has the same trouble spots, but I can play them a little more consistently now. The B section in D minor is clearly the biggest struggle, so I need to work on that in isolation. The problem is, by the time I get to that section, my hand is already quite sore from all that precedes it.

In addition, since playing this hurts my hand so much, I really cannot record it with my typical 40-50 takes, as my hand would fall off. As a result, you're hearing it with plenty of mistakes.

Eric Phillips Eric, that is sounding really good. Barrios certainly had a wide range of styles I his compositions. This so different from what know of his compositions - which is pretty limited. Thanks for playing this - and so well.

Eric Phillips This is sounding good Eric. I sympathise with the sore hand as they say, an artist suffers for his art!

    • Eric Phillips great update on this one Eric. I'm sure it'll sound flawless by the end of the challenge... you said the prelude in Cm was kind of hard... 🤔... not compared to this one, but this is far more interesting as a whole.

    • Blaise Laflamme Thanks, Blaise. I'd like to be able to get this one sounding pretty good ... flawless might not be attainable, but I'll do my best. 💪

Here's another piece by Barrios I decided to work on. It's new to me, and I like the idea of playing some lesser-known pieces by Barrios. This one is very dramatic, at least when played well (check out Jeffrey McFadden's performance on YT). It still needs lots of work, but I really like it.

    • Eric Phillips Thanks for sharing this piece. Barrios spent a lot of time in Uruguay and it is great to be introduced this piece.

Eric Phillips Great start, Eric. I listened to McFadden's recording. Wow, that is quite challenging (but well within your grasp). I am really glad to see you take this on and I'm excited to see your progress.

Eric Phillips Wonderful Eric. I've never heard this one before even though I am familiar with a lot of Barrios pieces!

    • Jack Stewart Yes, there are parts of it that really need to be played fast to be effective. Obviously not my strength!
