  • Ok here's #10... my last submission for this challenge! It was by far the most difficult I've been working on out of the #1 to #6. I wanted to memorize it while slowly learning it and then once fingers were secured attempt to speed it up... I mostly succeeded the first but failed at the second... I would need another week to reach the speed it needs... Martin I challenged you, then I challenged myself 😅

    • Barney thank you for your kind comments and appreciation. I would have like to do it better before the end of the challenge, I should have started on it earlier and put more time upfront, but I was interested by the whole set too... three weeks is kind of short!

Blaise Laflamme Agreed--3 weeks is short for these kind of studies to do polished performances.  I guess the idea is to expose us to them enough so that we can continue working on them later; also, to force a "deadline" establishing consistent practice and discipline.  You definitely succeeded at a high level under this constraint.

    • Barney agree, deadlines are mandatory to get results, and those studies are a huge addition to our repertoire!

Hello everybody, for the last week I have been looking at the week 2 thread and wondering why there were no new postings! Today I watched all the new posts in the tight thread and they are very good.
I have been working very hard on studies 3, 4, 5, although I have not been so active recording  myself, only no 3 and it is already commented

Study 4 is well memorised and still find new things to improve so I keep delaying my recording. It is beautiful and in these 3 weeks my bars and slurs have improved a lot.
Study 5: beautiful. It is also memorised and ready to be improved and improved. In this one, it took me longer than usual finding the phrases and the melodic line.
thank you so so much Mr Koshkin for giving us these challenging, beautiful, different  and very didactic studies. Thank you Martin, Tonebase for making these available and your support, and special videos  and to the challengers of the ring for the inspiration and encouragement!
it has been an incredible challenge

Hello guys, hope you're all okay! Well, I couldn't resist to post something for this challenge, Koshkin's Etudes are amazing! I wanted to post the videos sooner but an unexpected presentation came and I had to give priority to it 🙃 So here I'm playing nr. 4 and 6, wanted to do nr. 5  as well but I couldn't find the time, nay I almost could do the Study #4 😅

    Study 4:

    • What I found easy: mostly the fingerings and barrés, although I'll keep on working on the barrés.
    • What I found difficult: The starting descending arpeggio 😵 It's a little hard for me to get those 16th notes quite precise.

    Study 6:

    • What I found easy: Again, the fingerings are great here!
    • What I found difficult: Mostly the shifts for the left hand and the short notes in the bass at the beginning.

... Sorry for the poker face... 😂

    • Daniel Beltrán Great work, Daniel! I particularly liked #6. You were able to get it up to full tempo, and you seemed so poised and in control.

Eric Phillips Thanks, Eric! I guess that my concert this weekend gave me more concentration and serenity. I would like to look as if I'm enjoying more what I'm playing, actually. Hope to see one your videos on today's Watch-Party!

Blaise Laflamme Ok 😆 awesome job for that little time, and like Koshkin said during the Watch-Party, with practice it'll just get better and better! Now you have Koshkin himself challenging you haha.

    Barney Blaise Laflamme joosje

Hey guys, I finally managed to record a video where I talk about how I approached the staccati in Study #10 ! As usual, there is no perfect solution, but applying both left and right hand techniques as well as musical effects will create the illusion of a very accented staccato even on adjacent strings!

Martin Thanks very much Martin!!  That was extremely helpful.  So if I'm able to work on this piece and want you to review a video, should I attach it in Week 3?

I appreciate really you taking the time to make this instructive video for us. You are awesome!!

Barney You just type the "@" symbol and then the name, that way you can choose someone you want to take. That way, this user get notified. This happens automatically when you hit "Reply"!

    • Martin you're so right about speed, it makes things behave very differently. For me playing at tempo was not a problem till the sixteenth notes, were I needed to raise up the speed, and that's why I opted for a submission were I was able to play the whole piece at a coherent speed. But I'll definitely put more time on it just to play it at the right speed for my personal satisfaction! Thanks a lot for your dedication to us!

Martin Blaise Laflamme   Hey guys,  I didn't have time during the challenge to start on this study, but was so impressed by the way both of you played it, I figured I'd give it a try.  It is not memorized and polished like yours, and there are some mistakes in this take.  I wanted to do enough work on it to at least benefit from the study's intended purpose.  Please let me know your thoughts and if I'm on the right track.  Thanks!

    • Barney wow Barney, great job!! you're totally on the right track! Take care of the A flat on bar 11, penultimate top note, as the first chord of the bar has it. I'm eager to hear the final result!!

Blaise Laflamme Thanks Blaise!  Good catch...I was playing A natural in error.  I think I would need to memorize this study in order to play it better and faster, but not sure I'll have time at this point to do that.

      Like
    • Barney at least for me it wouldn't be possible to play it better and faster without being memorized, but after a few days of playing it got memorized. But the thing is to speed it up, mostly for the arpeggios and scales, I have to slowly bump up the metronome until I'm safe on the next speed... but I'll post an update on it, while I don't know when 😅. I encourage you to continue on this study as a kind of «exercise», I find it very good to unlock speed and relaxed playing.
