    • Oscar Leonardo Molina Sierra what an interesting instrument Oscar! If I read right it's 12 strings grouped by 4 groups of 3 strings, right? I hope you'll post more before the end!

    • Blaise Laflamme of course Im very exiting that you liked it this instrument, and yes, is a instrument that its similar like a guitar, but whit the only four strings (E - B - G - D) and the grouped of the strings is: Principal string (B) and the other two strings are Requintillas pitched up octave. Yes I like to continue publishing more of thise instrument.

  • Continuing with my journey through Abel Carlevaro's compositions, here are two very different pieces which draw upon traditional Uruguayan music.  The first is entitled Estilo "Campo Arado."  This is an early unpublished work, most likely written for one of his students.  The title translates to the "Style of a Plowed Field."  The second post is a milonga based on the traditional milonga rhythm.  It is titled "Milonga para Ling" and was written in 1998 for his student Dr. Ling. It is published by Chanterelle Publishers.  The background photo that I used for these two posts was taken in 1983 in San Francisco and includes Carlevaro, his wife Vani, my younger self, and my daughter.  One of the great honors that I had was to host Maestro Carlevaro and Vani in my home during his visits to San Francisco.

    • Dale Needles thanks Dale for those 2 beautiful pieces well played ❤️. I only know the Milonga Oriental by Carlevaro, interesting to discover another one! Your younger self could have been in a rock band with this haircut 😅

    • Eric Phillips Blaise Laflamme Thanks.  This challenge is bringing out some great memories and I am loving sharing with everyone Carlevaro the composer.  As for the younger self, I guess we all probably had rock ambitions at some point.  Mine ended after I graduated from high school, which is when I started studying the classical guitar.

Dale Needles These are nice, Dale. Certainly more tame harmonically than some of his other works.

  • Barrios – Medallón Antiguo (Apr 18 update)

I'm now playing through the entire piece, including the C section in B major. That is definitely the most difficult section for me to play legato, but it is slowly getting there. Once I feel comfortable with it all under my fingers, I will focus on adding more musicality.

    • Eric Phillips that was great Eric, you definitely made huge progress on it 💪 The C section actually seems to be the hardest but you're doing well so it's a matter of time until it flows at the same level.

Eric Phillips Thanks for sharing, Eric. Your playing was already quite smooth. I don't know what "Medallón Antiguo" means, but the music sounded romantic and nostalgic in your hands. 🌅

Eric Phillips This is sounding really good, Eric. Your trills are very crisp and you have very good separation of voices. Great job.

Eric Phillips Bravo, Eric! I agree with Blaise, it's just a matter of time before the entire piece will be done. Great job!

    • Wai Thanks, Wai. The title just means "Antique Medallion" (I'm not sure why) and there is an instruction to play it "in the manner of the ancient vihuelists".

Eric Phillips just did some research online and found an interesting description on the Naxos website: "Medallon Antiguo (Old Medallion), named after a piece of jewellery worn by an opera singer from Buenos Aires with whom Barrios fell in love."

That's why it sounds so romantic.❤️

Well I missed week 2, been away to Filey on the North East coast of the UK - the other side of the North Sea and slightly further north than Heligoland where I think Martin has been. I was hoping to take my guitar but couldn't fit it in so not had much chance to practice.

Here is a rough recording of Maria Louisa by Julio Sagreras.  I haven't quite memorised the second section yet as you can probably tell. It's a fairly simple piece but I like it.
