Barrios - Medallón Antiguo (Apr 19 update)

I'm pretty happy with this take. I tried to play it from memory several times, as I tend to be more musical when I do that. Unfortunately, once I hit the record button, my memory suddenly takes a vacation. So after a bunch of takes in which the music just stopped because I forgot what came next, I decided to use the score more. Overall, I'm pretty pleased though. The C section is more legato than it was yesterday.

  Eric Phillips You nailed it. Great to see your progress and hear the end result. I have seen this piece in the Richard Stover's Edition of Barrios works but never read through it. It is nice piece and shows a different side of the great Barrios, particularly how connected he was to the rich history of classical/Spanish guitar music.

  Stefanie Mosburger-Dalz Wow, Stefanie, you just keep rolling out all these pieces with great Latin grooves! I can't listen to this without moving my head and shoulders a bit to the rhythm. Sounds great!

  Stefanie Mosburger-Dalz This is great, Stefanie. I am realizing how I tend to get trapped in playing 'serious' music and that having more casual pieces in my repertoire is also important. Thanks for sharing this delightful piece.

  Jack Stewart there exists nothing easy if you want to play good...so there is nothing thats not serious for me in music- my former celloteacher told me he had to play in a popband to survive a crisis and that taught him "Demut" which means he had to recognize how much you have to manage doing this stuff in gesminor;-) and sound light and easy....but the peace I played, is easy for you all, Im not at that level, but dayly growing....

  Stefanie Mosburger-Dalz I agree with you, Stefanie. All music that is enjoyed and well played is serious. My use of 'quotes' was trying to acknowledge how pretentious I can get. Watching your video I realized how envious I was of your relaxed and enjoyable performance. Thanks.

Today I am posting my recording of Carlevaro's, Preludio Americano 1, Evocación. The suite of five preludes were dedicated to Andres Segovia and published in 1970s. This first prelude is very representative of Carlevaro's tonal language which he greatly expands upon in his sonata, Cronomias. The photo that used for the background is Maestro Carlevaro in his home studio in Montevideo, Uruguay.

  Blaise Laflamme Glad you liked it. It is also one of my favorites and the first one I ever learned back in 1978. I had not played it in many years and only recently picked it back up. When you mentioned that you were working on one of the preludes, I thought it might be Campo. However, considering your taste for contemporary music, I can see now how Evocacion would be to our liking. Sorry to beat you to it. In any case, please still post it. I would love to hear you play it and your recordings are so outstanding, a class by themselves. Additionally, are you working on any other Carlevaro preludes or other pieces. I was thinking of posting Campo but would hold off if you had that one in mind. I have other pieces I can work on.

  Dale Needles I'm happy you beat me off!! In fact I'm working on all of them, I eventually want to put them up online, but they are not all ready for sharing, and I want to record them on my upcoming new guitar. In order of «readiness» I would say 1, 3, (2, 4) and 5. I think I'll keep my plan for Evocation and let you post Campo, I also have other pieces I'm working on but still have an issue with my nails, hope this get fixed ASAP! I also started reading the first 5 Microestudios over the weekend after your submissions, so if I ever make them listenable I'll share. I'm more than happy by your sharing about Carlevaro, great stuff!! 💪

  Blaise Laflamme Great that you are working on all five of the preludes. That is a major task and I can't wait to check them out when you post on your Youtube channel. While I played all five in the distant past, I am currently working on 1, 3 & 4 and hope to add 2 and 5 at some point. Glad you are reading through the microestudios. I really enjoy starting my day with them and like to work on five at a time and then rotate them out with others after a month or so.

  Dale Needles Really well played!! I have never played music that sounds so modern, It must be very hard to interpret this kind of music.
