Week 4: Tango Tempest 🌪️🎶

Welcome to the Main Thread for the fourth week of "Song and Dance" practice challenge!

  1. Choose a piece that is inspired or transcribed from a song or a dance. It could be a lively south-american danza, a passionate tango, a serene romantic lied, or a poignant aria transcribed for the guitar. You're welcome to explore pieces from unfamiliar composers or challenge yourself with a complex work. 🎼

  2. Commit to daily practice and share your journey with the community. Aim to practice every day and upload at least two videos each week to illustrate your progress. This will not only help you stay committed and encouraged but will also allow you to share your musical voyage with our tonebase family. 🎥

  3. Share your favorite piece or recording that embodies the theme of "Song and Dance." Your submission will serve as an inspiration to others and create a vibrant pool of potential pieces for other members to delve into. 🎧

↓ Happy Sharing! ↓

    Lob der Tranen

was experimenting playing tasto for a different tone. Its is actually much difficult than i thought playing in this position.  I think largely succeed in getting the tone i want, there are still mistakes here and there especially in section B. But is close to getting how i like it to sound.

will try post an update if i have time.

don nice work on both of these song Don! The feeling that I'm getting is that you really enjoy playing them, and your own voice is emerging through them. Yes, keep going with these after the challenge!

    • don Great job on both of these, Don! I have tried both a few times, but I always stall out and give up.

      Jack Stewart 😄 that's a good one.

Blaise Laflamme Barney Dale Needles Thanks! I'll try one more with more surigical use of tasto. The funny thing about playing in this position for me is that i realize it impacted my left hand quite a lot even though logically is just manner of shifting the right hand.

Steve Pederson Thank you! Yes I really do enjoy playing. There are certain pieces that just resonates with you when you play them and I really feel it with these 2 pieces.

Eric Phillips I guess is cos these 2 two pieces are at least 100 years later than the type of music you love.  I think some of Mertz pieces would sound great on your lute.

Lob Der Tranen - last take

Tried to use tasto only for the intro and some portions of the section 2. The appregio portion of section 2 still trips me up and is a bit hard to keep the tempo in check. Will keep working on this, my next target for this piece is to learn to introduce vibrato to the melody line in section 2.

don Your improvement after just a few weeks of practice was really noticeable! But I have to say that I missed the sound of the bird singing. 😂

    It takes two to tango!

Here is a duet of Eric Phillips and I playing a minuet called, interestingly enough, In a Minuet

I'd be interested to see if anyone has any guesses as to the composer or time period in which it was written.

Steve Pederson Very cool indeed. You guys play well together. More duets to come?

I'll venture an uninformed guess- Brian Head, 20th -21st C.?

BTW Steve, I came across a tShirt that might be applicable for you.

    • Steve Pederson Very cool!  Muy guess is a contemporary composer trying to sound like Dowland.

Jack Stewart Ha! That's the perfect t-shirt for me Jack!

I've never heard of Brian Head. This is actually one of my original compositions!

I like the idea of doing duets. This will probably not be the last.

Dale Needles Thanks Dale! Great guess - it's one of my original compositions, though I wrote it before I knew who Dowland was - or anything about Baroque or Renaissance music for that matter! I think I wrote it before I even got into classical guitar!

Steve Pederson Excellent work, Steve! That is a great composition. Well, I did get the time frame correct - assuming your not over 123 years old.😮

      I would suggest a slight revision - 'In a Minuet or 2'

Jack Stewart Nice one, Jack! You caught the play on words. In fact, I recorded this for my album back in 2005. There is a "filled out" version - complete with synthesized orchestra, and then a second version with just one guitar which I called In Another Minuet. I like your idea better, though, come to think of it.

If you're interested, you can find the original recordings here on YouTube.
