HVL Etude #5 complete but still rough
Well I have managed to make it thru the entire etude but I still have difficulty maintaining a consistent performance. I have settle on my fingering, and I can pretty much play all sections accurately when they are separate (and I'm not recording). I think I am close enough to start focussing on phrasing and articulation. Hopefully I can get a good performance by the end of the challenge.
This has been a frustrating experience because it didn't seem to be THAT challenging, technically. However, it sure has been challenging for me. I am glad I am learning this etude as it has always been my favorite of HVL.

Jack Stewart Great progress with this Etude. It is such a great one and you are very close. Another week should do the trick. I hope those Carlevaro fingerings were helpful.

Jack Stewart Already made great progress. Some of the shifts are really difficult especially some of the jumps, maybe trying using a guide finger? Like Dale said probably another week or so will do.

Jack Stewart Wow! You took on the beast! Nice job keeping the ostinato steady and at a lower level, while bringing out the melody. Gabriel’s lesson was very helpful.

Jack Stewart Great job on this Etude Jack!! I agree that many his Etudes and Preludes may appear easier than they really are to play well. You are doing excellent work on this, and all it needs now are some finishing touches. It sounds great so far.

Dale Needles Thanks Dale. The Carlevaro fingerings were helpful. I'm t a point where I will practice each part that is problematic until smooth and then move on to the next one. But when I go back to the first section it still gives me problems. Arrrggh! However, they do seem to clean up quicker - so maybe they will be 'on the same page' soon.

Marilyn Blodget Thanks Marilyn. I had been eyeing this piece for years (decades actually) but was always hesitant to take it on. I assumed it would be a 'rabbit hole - and it is! But I am glad I am finally grappling with it.

Jack Stewart your progress is impressive, Jack. Especially how you keep the ostinato going. It makes the whole piece so exciting . And this moment at the 2nd page where the f# comes in in the bass... I find this one of HVlL’s most intriguing compositions. Great job, and there’s still time for updates….
