  • Lob der Tränen, week 2. I started teaching full time this week, so I don't practice as much as I would like to, but I still practice a little bit each day. I made some progress on the second part. I I haven't played on that guitar that much, my thumb is often confuse and don't play the right bass note. I need to prepare more. But overall, it is starting to take shape. I will try to record this weekend the whole song.

    • Hélène Beaulieu great work, Helene. It’s coming along. I like your glissandi/portamento, and your rallentandos  make perfectly sense. Very musical. Thank you for sharing with us!

Hélène Beaulieu Beautiful Helene. I am looking forward to your complete performance. I love the move from D7 to B flat (ultimately g min) at the the end.

Hélène Beaulieu well played Helene (sorry - no accents on the keyboard). I have been trying to play this for a few months and it is only just coming together. There is one slide up to the chord with the 12th fret E  that I find very difficult - I like how you have a little smile just after playing it (successfully). Maybe I'll post a video of it this weekend.

I have done a bit of work on a Rameau Minuet. Originally for keyboard instrument arranged for guitar by Segovia. I have played minuet 1 in the past but not really played minuet 2 before. Quite a long piece with all of the repeats.

    • Derek Very nice, Derek! Other than knowing his name, I really do not know anything about Rameau or his music. I did find this nice painting of him holding a violin, but his right hand looks like he's plucking it like a lute. Maybe that's what inspired Segovia to transcribe his music!

Derek Very nice Here. I have a few pieces of Rameau's transcribed for guitar, generally from Premiere Livre de Clavecin (Alexander Bellow International Anthology) but I do not know these. Do you know what suites they are from?

    • Derek great Derek, that's not an easy piece regarding legato! I've done a few Rameau transcriptions for guitar duo using a drop B for the 6th string, that's really beautiful music.

    • Derek That's great, we don't hear a lot of Rameau on the guitar. Good choice!

Jack Stewart thanks Jack. I think they are from Pieces de Clavecin but not really sure. I bought the music a while back when looking for a minuet by Rameau that Segovia played but it was actually not the one I'd heard. I found the music for the actual minuet I wanted when a friend bought a lot of music he found on Ebay a couple of years ago and it was amongst that. I'll have a go at that one next week!

Derek I just found a recording of those minuets. They are from the Nouvelles suites de pièces de clavecin: III suite. It's always challenging to figure out which collection pieces are from with Rameau. I think he named all of his collections Pièces de Clavecin. Very nice.

  • Schumann's Traumerei (update Jan 14)

I have continued to work on this beautiful music. In the A and A' sections, I made some small changes in the fingerings that I think improve it a bit. The big change is in second phrase the B section (measures 13-16). I had been playing the melody an octave lower, but now I have it back up where Schumann (and Tarrega) put it, which I think is more musically effective. I'm still a little wary in this section, but I got through it here.

Also, I am now playing it without a score. This happened the natural way - just from practicing it so much that I have it memorized. I'm sure that a live performance of it, however, would completely knock the whole thing out of my memory!

    • Eric Phillips 👏👏👏absolutely wonderful performance. I m impressed with your progress overall. Your tone is so beautiful, phrasing also. I can listen over and over again. It’s a pity there’s some drumming on the background. In your recording system, I guess.
