  • Mozart's Il Mio Tesoro (arr. Pratten)

Here is an arrangement of an aria from Don Giovanni found in Catherina Pratten's "Guitar School" (score attached, but the whole book is easily found on IMSLP). Any chance we have to play some of Mozart's music on the guitar is a real privilege.

Eric Phillips I am actually referring to Op. 19, Six Airs from the Magic Flute. One of the airs is the same one for Sor's Op. 9 Variations, though much simpler. These pieces are quite nice.

    • Jack Stewart Sorry, Jack, I misunderstood. I am not familiar with his Op 19, but I just looked it up. They all seem pretty difficult to me!

    Schubert /Mertz  Standchen

This is another piece I had worked on quite a while back and am trying it again. Very rough indeed! I probably won't have it polished for a while. The second verse always gives me a hard time. As does the B section. As does the intro........

Eric Phillips Well... I got 1 out of 2 right this time. It should be good now. Thanks, again, for the heads up.

    • Jack Stewart Wow, that is sounding nice, Jack! I have tried this a few times myself, and I just can't seem to get the polyrhythm down. You make it sound just right. It obviously needs more work, but that is a really difficult piece, and you got through the whole thing!

At times in this, the sound was out of sync with the video. I'm not sure if that is my computer messing up or not, though.

    • Jack Stewart good job, Jack. Sounds so beautiful It’s a great arrangement, by Mertz. Quite difficult btw. Especially the differentiation between vocal line and accompaniment. And, indeed, those triplets with the eight notes are complicated. You did great already, would love to hear you again with this one.

Jack Stewart wonderful Jack. It would be great if you could work on this and play it at one of the next concerts. Looking forward to hearing it. I can almost play Lob der Thranen and I've been looking at Der Fischermadchen but haven't managed to get through that yet

Lutoslawski Folk Melodies #1 'Oh My Johnny'

I have to get something modern in here to salvage my reputation (🙄whatever that means). I heard these on a Julian Bream album of modern music and loved them. I just recently acquired the transcriptions (by Raymond Burley). This is my first effort at these.

    • Jack Stewart Nice arrangement and great playing, Jack! Was that modern? It sounded a bit like Schubert. 😃

Blaise Laflamme Thanks Blaise. I think the too high fretting is me trying to record myself.

Jack Stewart BTW thanks Eric (despite your attempt to sully my reputation as a confirmed modernist).

    • Jack Stewart yeah, recording ourselves is kind of stressing and it takes time until we feel confident. That's why lately I started to record longer sessions, like practice and play a piece for 30 minutes, let say, and at some point you forget the recording part and then pick the best part after.

  • Haydn's Tempo di Menuet from Sonata in D major XVI:33 (trans. Tarrega)

I found this fairly guitar-friendly transcription of some music by Joseph Haydn. The piano version is quite brisk with more ornamentation. The B section is particularly fun to play.
