  • Late in the challenge, but I am just curious how many of you are familiar with the Preludios epigramaticos, by Leo Brouwer. There are six of them, here the first one:

” Desde el alba  quiso ser alba, toda eres madre” a poem by Miguel Hernandez, from the “Poemas de Amor”, to be precise.

I am still working on Brouwer’s “danza characteristica” and also the “danza del Altiplano”, not able too choose, so both still “travail a faire”…

these six preludes are so ‘zen’, and very nice to play. Listening back to this recording I realize that I should be able to make more contrast in loudness and tone color. Worked on that, but I don’t hear what I expected….

joosje That sounded so meditative, but I was distracted by the guitar head this time, I just noticed that it was somewhat different. 😮

joosje That was beautiful, Joosje. I was not familiar with this work. It is a bit similar to the Pieza sin Titulo I presented at the beginning of the Challenge. You did a wonderful job sustaining the serene mood. Thanks for presenting this.

I liked the mixed posts, with more than one video! 😉 In this one, I'll post three pieces.

    ZAMBA DEL VIENTO

This is an homage to Atahualpa Yupanqui, a great composer and guitarist, but essentially, a great human. This Zamba is not from Atahualpa, is Argentinian folklore, but he masterfully recorded it. I was in a hurry to learn this piece and record it to this challenge because - for me - is impossible to talk about Latin American music without him.

BACHIANINHA Nº 1 - PAULINHO NOGUEIRA

I played this piece in the last dress rehearsal. I love this piece, I've been playing her for a long time.

SE ELA PERGUNTAR - DILERMANDO REIS

Brazilian serenade music, a lovely piece from Dilermando Reis. My father made me play this for him many times, and I still play for him -  wherever he is -  with love and gratitude.

Maybe tomorrow I'll post some more music from my lovely continent. Thank you all for listening!

    • Moyses Lopes I dont like it, I love it and I hope, your father -wherever he is- can hear this...so so wonderful, so pure.....a lifetime peace

    • Moyses Lopes you have such great feeling for this music. And what an admirable control of tone and detail. Thank you especially for the Zamba., which brought back the spirit of Atahualpa. Your interpretation of Dilermando Reis is a relish for the ear and soul and then the  Bachaninha,… great piece, so beautifully played.

    • Moyses Lopes Bravo!  Such lovely pieces and you played them so well.  You can really tell that this music comes from within you.  Also, so glad you were able to present these three great guitarist/composers.  I totally agree that Atahualpa Yupanqui was a major guitarist/composer of Latin America.  I also love his music.  Do you play any of Eduardo Falu's music? Another great Argentine guitarist/composer who I had the good fortune to hear live back in 1982 in Montevideo. In any case, I really enjoyed all your posts during this challenge.

Moyses Lopes Wow, Week 4 is full of high-level performances. All 3 pieces were so perfectly played, with so much colour and emotion. It was an eye-opening week for me. 😳

Dale Needles Thank you! You're a gentleman! Yes, Atahualpa is one of the greats, mainly because like Carlevaro and Villa-Lobos he distinguished herself not only as a composer and guitarist but as a great disseminator of his culture. Falú was another great disseminator of Pampa's Culture. Unfortunately, I don't play anything of Falú, a lack in my repertoire, but I'll fix this! 🙂 Thank you for your kindness, Dale!

    • Moyses Lopes Sorry for the late reply. I somehow missed these videos, Moyses! So much good music here.

As always, all three are spectacular. In the Zamba, you play with such strong and stately rhythm. In the Bachianinha, your right hand technique is so impressive. And in Se Ela Perguntar, you make that melody sing so nicely, with great rubato.

Moyses Lopes These are wonderful, Moyses. I especially like the Reis, though all three are great. Your grasp of this music is amazing as is you your technique to pull it off (on 3 submissions nonetheless). Great Job.

  • Brouwer - Estudios Sencillos Nos 9 and 10

Well, it's the last day, so I'll post these last two studies. I have not touched the new ones (#11-20) at all.

These last two estudios are more difficult than the previous eight, and my execution is not too clean. In number 9. doing those slurs while also making the adjacent string ring out is so difficult, especially at tempo. In number 10, I used rest stroke a lot, and my rest stroke is not too good.

It has been a pleasure learning and sharing some Latin American music with all of you. I'm afraid I will not be able to attend the Watch Party live, but I will watch it later. Many thanks to all of you who posted such great music, and offered me support and advice for my music.

Eric Phillips I think I didn't play no.9 when I first learned this set of etudes, this was my first time hearing it. I am still waiting for your no.2 though 😂

Eric Phillips Wow! Your prodigious output continues to amaze me, Eric (er...@Martin). Great job.

These seem, at least to me, to be more challenging musically. (or maybe I just don't care for them as much as some of Brouwer's other etudes).

    • Jack Stewart Thanks, Jack. These come from the real me. I'm sure Martin could play them better blindfolded, with his arm in a cast.

Eric Phillips Bravo! I love both, but the 10 has a lot of atmospheres to explore and you made the contrasts very well. You're a tireless player, thank you for sharing!
