Welcome to tonebase!

Hey everyone - this is Igor from tonebase 🙂!

It's such a pleasure to welcome you as one of the founding members of the tonebase community. Please introduce yourself in a post below with the following format:

  • Where are you from and what's your favorite food from there? ;)
  • What are you currently working on?
  • What are you hoping to get out of this community?

I'll go first:

  • While it's hard to pinpoint where exactly I'm from, lol, I just go with Bavaria Germany, and as favorite food, I'd choose Beer (surprise, surprise - closely followed by "Schweinshaxe" - Bavarian Pork-knuckle, which is quite delicious, but sooo heavy that it feels weird calling it favorite food)
  • Trying to keep my Aranjuez in the fingers, even though certainly don't have that much time to practice as during college days...
  • I hope we can facilitate authentic and interesting discussions around playing, learning, teaching, performing the guitar as well as all adjacent topics like concert prep, professional development, auditioning etc...

Now over to you (after some participation from our tonebase team members!)

    Hello all,

I am Bart Versteeg and live in the Netherlands. I played a lot when I was young, stopped when I was 35.  Now, 25 years later I did a restart. I have a great teacher (Yes, you Francesco Chávez!) and am on a intermediate level again. Struggling with La Catedral, Asturias, Bachs Lute Suite no. 2 , Pujols Verde Alma and Darragh ONeills Cocobolo.

since 3 weeks I join a mandolin ensemble and orchestra.

I received a lifetime membership as a farewell gift from a national society in which I was a board member.

    Musical greetings,

    Bart

    • Bart Versteeg hallo Bart. I hope you’ll enjoy the Tonebase forum as much as I do. Seeing the works you are practicing (don’t say struggling!) you’re well above intermediate level. These are quite advanced level pieces, mind you. 😀

  • I'm Scott from Oklahoma, US. I'm just getting started at learning guitar properly. As oppopsed to pounding away on power chords with excessive amount of distortion. Currently working on right hand technique, which I am finding extremly difficult as I have always used a pick. I know, practice, practice, practice. I am also attempting piano through pianote.com, A 3 month subscription came with the purchase of my Roland electric piano. Favorite food, hmmm yes please. I'm always willing to try something new. Looking foward to further my understanding of guitar and piano.

  • Hi,

I am an intermediate acoustic guitar player that registered with tonebase in order to develop skills and eventually a repertoire of classical music.

I am looking forward to start and test some courses in the next few days

Hi, my name is Jim.  I live in Canada, in southwestern Ontario.

I joined Tonebase to properly learn how to play classical music.  I've been playing guitar for approximately 2 years now, after a 45 year absence.  I learned a bit of classical guitar on another website but felt that I was stalling out.

I am starting to get used to the Tonebase website and found some course appropriate for my beginner level.  I am sure that I will know some of the material but there is probably other topics that I need to learn or refresh myself on.

    Looking forward to this journey.

Hi, my name is Ingo. I live in Berlin, Germany.

I learned classical guitar as a (lazy) teenager, then stopped, then had two years of lessons again, then stopped for a long time and started again 5 years ago (at the moment autodidactically) and will definitely stay with it 'til I'm falling apart.
I'm working on Barrios' Choro da Saudade and struggle with the stretches. And I'm still working on Scarlatti's Sonata 213. Just enjoyed Zoran's course on Capricho Arabe. He is great and gave some really smart hints.
Looking forward to improve on tonebase and would especially like to get in contact with people in Berlin.

Ingo Great to have you here, Ingo! I recorded Zoran's Course on Capricho Arabe in La Herradura! It was a fantastic trip with Zoran Dukic, Steve Goss, and David Russel. I was a bit nervous as all my cameras and microphones got lost by the airline, so we had quite a stressful time making this production tour still happen, but I'm happy that the material turned out the way it did!

  • Hi, I'm Austin Flemming.

    1. I don't necessarily have a home town that I grew up in. My life has been divided between three countries, but the one I hold close to my heart is Singapore, and my favorite food from there was Roti Prata and curry from this pace that wasn't too far from the apartment my family lived in.

    2. The piece I'm working on currently is Le Calme by Fernando Sor and I've just recently got through learning the whole piece, but now I'm trying to work on ironing out the rough spots and eventually connecting to the piece a bit more and developing good tone, dynamics, and emphasis on the melody. I also have been trying to work through Ricardo Iznaola's Kitharologus and get a steady practice routine.

    3. I hope that this community can help me broaden my perspective on what it means to be a classical guitarist and hopefully gain the tools and skills to use either in a career as a classical musician or just make this a lifelong hobby I can enjoy. I also hope to join a community of supportive and helpful people and gain the confidence to do whatever it is that this classical guitar journey brings.

    • Austin Flemming Welcome to the community Austin! You'll certainly find here a ground where you can share and present ideas and performance with great feedback from others, and from a lot of different perspectives and approaches. Why not join the next challenge early next year, hope to see you there once announced!

  • Hi all, I'm Michael Hansen.

I grew up - a long time ago - in a suburb to Copenhagen, the Capital of Denmark (which is actual a Scandinavian country and not a city in Sweden 😉). My favorite food from here is mostly all danish food not made of entrails, but should I single out a specific dish, if would currently be... no, I really can't point to a specific favorite. Come to Denmark and try it all for yourself 🙂.

I'm not currently working on a specific piece, as I'm joining Tonebase to get started with the guitar again, after a very long pause. So my current task is to get stamina back in my fingers and inspiration to continue my musical journey. That started in my mid-40's where I picked up an instrument for the first time in my life. The next 5 years was a hard journey, which unfortunately ended as my tutor move too far away for personal tutoring to continue. As I was not ready for distance (video) lessons, and at the same time got another job which kept me very busy, the guitar was longtime parked. I'm now in my mid/late 50'es and yearn for the relaxation and enjoyment of playing the guitar. So here I am, trying to pick it up with the help of Tonebase.

Here at the beginning I will probably focus on the courses provided by Tonebase, but later I expect to turn to this community for inspiration on where to go musically.

As we are just started 2023, let me also take the opportunity to wish you all a happy New Year and the best for the year to come.

    Cheers,
    Michael.

I'm from Germany, but I like Italian food.

I am currently working on a duo „Tres piezas de otoño“ by Pujol. I also play in plucked orchestras.

On tonebase I’d like to find ideas to improve my playing, get to know new pieces and to share and learn with others about guitar topics.

  • Hello

My name is Marc. I live in Basel in Switzerland

My favourite food is Italian Pasta in all forms (spaghetti, penne, ravioli,, tagliatelle and so on with sugo of tomatoes or pesto Genovese and so on!). And of corse a good red wine from Italy.

I hope to get inspirations by working on Arpeggios -technics, and Tremolo-Technics, how to change accords without noise. Over the last years I was learning Flamenco -technics as different Rasgueados, Alzapúa, and so on, by playing little peaces from Flamenco - Guitar-players, as Tomato, Vicente Amigo and Gerardo Nûnez. I don't have the goal to get a perfect classical guitar-player, bud to get inspired from the classical approach to learn technical skills on the guitar, bud also get an understanding of the musical background ( music - theory, bud also creative intentions of the composers). I don't play daily my guitar, bud I want to do this exactly!

I hope to get inspired from this community,  by being able to have an enlarged oversight over the repertoire of the classical guitar-music. And maybe also being able to inspire the community with my way to play the guitar and my personality.

    • Marc Perret Hi Marc, welcome to Tonebase.  If you want to make shifts without string noise, check out the Carlevaro Discussion Forum on Tonebase.  Maestro Carlevaro was one of the few guitarists who played with no string noise.  He developed a very innovative School of Guitar.  He also has great arpeggio and tremolo exercises in his Cuaderno No 2.

Hello, I'm Greg and live in the Charlotte, NC area.  Excited to be here!

    * I spent most of my years in Hershey, PA.  My go to here in NC is pulled pork (vinegar based).

    * Currently working on Estudio in E-minor and Forgotten along with some reading exercises.

    * I spent a few years in another online school and took a break when the pandemic hit so I'm kind of dusting off and getting back to work. I'm hoping to gain as much knowledge and insight that I can from this platform and community.

  • Hi!  I'm Morris. I live in Alabaster Alabama. It's a suburb of Birmingham.

My favorite food is tacos, or whatever is on my plate.   I'm not picky.

I have been playing guitar for 46 years and classical guitar for about 38 years.   I graduated with a BA degree in music in 1993.  I joined tonebase to recover any missing or lost techniques.   I'm excited to see what new things I can learn.  You are never too old to learn.

I hope we get to hear from you. I really suggest participating in the challenges and two-week intensive.

Hello, I'm Brian and I just joined Tonebase!

    • I'm a long-time resident of central North Carolina and have recently retired after a 40-year tech career.  Love Indian food and thankfully it's plentifully available around here!
    • Began playing folk/rock guitar 50 years ago.  Got into jazz a couple years after that, but did not learn effectively until much later.  Took a few years off guitar in a various installments during my adult life. Have been playing consistently for the last 15 years including some semi pro-level jazz type gigs.
    • Consider myself a "full time" music student now.  Have been studying classical guitar with an excellent local teacher as a adult for a total of 15 years, although limited in practice time until recently.
    • Also serious current student of jazz guitar (steel string and some nylon for Bossa, etc.) expanding my grasp of memorized jazz tunes, hearing through changes, advanced fingerboard harmony, improvisation, etc..  Doing Solfège and Rhythm studies on my own.  Have a decent foundation in basic Common Practice ("Piston") harmony.
    • For classical guitar repertoire:  currently playing/refining the shorter Sor Studies (1,2,5,6 from the Segovia ed.), Weiss Fantasie, Logy A Minor Partita, Brouwer #6, Milan Pavanes, etc.  Lot's of technique work too -- Segovia Scales, multi-octave arpeggios, LH legatos, etc.
    • I play a Kenny Hill Signature Double Top (Cedar exposed) and an Eastman Buscarino Cabaret when "plugging in" is necessary (mostly for live Jazz/Bossa things).
    • Looking to glean from the world's best classical guitarists and enjoy learning from/with others in love with Classical Guitar here on Tonebase!
