Pablo Marquez: Lob der Thränen by Mertz
Welcoming Pablo Márquez!
Pablo Márquez, the first-ever guitarist who recorded and performed in modern times the six Schubert Lieder transcribed by Johann Kaspar Mertz (he also recorded for ECM an acclaimed Schubert album with cellist Anja Lechner), will analyze and put in context the first of them, Lob der Tränen (Praise of tears). He will particularly focus on the connexions with the Liszt transcription of the same song and the understanding of how Schubert’s music embodies the text of August Wilhelm Schlegel.
I am so excited to have Pablo come in for a deep dive into one of my favorite pieces!!!

background, demonstrations in real time and most importantly conveying the deep appreciation by you and Pablo’s beautiful performances on a period guitar

martin Pablo spent a lot of time on the exact phrasing of the first variation with reference to the first stanza of the poem. There are two variations, but four stanzas to the poem. Which stanza would be best to refer to for the 2nd Variation? Stanza 2, chopping the poem off early or Stanza 4, gutting the poem but allowing for conclusion? Or is this just wrong-headed thinking, as the second variation is more instrumental in feel compared to the first?
