Pablo Marquez: Lob der Thränen by Mertz

Welcoming Pablo Márquez!

Pablo Márquez, the first-ever guitarist who recorded and performed in modern times the six Schubert Lieder transcribed by Johann Kaspar Mertz (he also recorded for ECM an acclaimed Schubert album with cellist Anja Lechner), will analyze and put in context the first of them, Lob der Tränen (Praise of tears). He will particularly focus on the connexions with the Liszt transcription of the same song and the understanding of how Schubert’s music embodies the text of August Wilhelm Schlegel.

I am so excited to have Pablo come in for a deep dive into one of my favorite pieces!!! ❤🥳🎸

Gutted that I can't attend this but I am going to see Manny's friend Sean Shibe in a music festival in Scotland. Will definitely catch up on this one.

Martin Thank you Martin!  Would you kindly post your annotated score of Lob der Thranen with your detailed fingerings?  That would be extremely helpful.

  • Martin, thanks for posting the PDF’s

    from today’s session so rapidly.

This session on Schubert/Mertz provided references to sources, meaningfulness of text, historical

background, demonstrations in real time and most importantly conveying the deep appreciation by you and Pablo’s beautiful performances on a period guitar

This one for tops in 2022. Bravo!

Barney and for everyone else, attaching here my original scores! Just a heads up, after this phenomenal session with Pablo I might change some of these fingerings (mainly sticking with the original ones!)

Martin Thanks very much Martin!!  After hearing both you and Pablo play this wonderful piece so beautifully, I think it's about time I start taking a look at it.  I was not familiar with Mertz before I started with Tonebase.

martin  Pablo spent a lot of time on the exact phrasing of the first variation with reference to the first stanza of the poem. There are two variations, but four stanzas to the poem. Which stanza would be best to refer to for the 2nd Variation? Stanza 2, chopping the poem off early or Stanza 4, gutting the poem but allowing for conclusion? Or is this just wrong-headed thinking, as the second variation is more instrumental in feel compared to the first?
