    Villanos - Gaspar Sanz

At first, I thought I would skip this month's challenge because I was practicing Gaspar Sanz's music recently. But when I opened my email box this morning and saw "Baroque Mini Challenge",  I was so happy and made a quick recording immediately, hope you guys like it.☺️

    • Wai Very nice Wai.  I can definitely see and hear your affinity to Sanz' music.  Have you ever checked out Carlevaro's arrangements of Sanz' music?  He did an arrangement of a suite of Sanz dances which is fantastic and very playable.

Dale Needles Thanks, Dale. I didn't know that Carlevaro had his own arrangement of Sanz's music, I definitely will check it out because my next plan is to practice some pieces from the "Suite Espanola"!
Sorry for not posting my old video in Carlevaro's forum, but I still want to record something new for it, let me practice the Microestuidos 11 first. 😅

  • Though recorded almost nine years ago, I thought I would share one of my favorite Baroque suites for this challenge.  (Weiss Sonata No. 34 Dresden).  This is Michael Lorimer's transcription in E minor.  The other seven movements can be reached using the last icon on the top right (1/8). I should relearn this after all that work! But this time, I think D minor would be more resonant. l  hope to get something I've been working on more recently up soon.

    • Rick Lord So beautiful, Rick! You play this era so perfectly. I particularly admire your ornaments. I think I have the score for this from the Noad "Baroque Guitar" anthology. I can't wait to hear it in D minor (I assume with drop D).

Rick Lord This beautiful, Rick - as always. You have such a command of this music and your performance of it is always so wonderful. Always glad to see your postings.

    • Stefanie Mosburger-Dalz Thanks very much Stefanie.  I really enjoyed learning that Suite almost a decade ago!

    • Eric Phillips Thanks Eric.  I read through a transcription of the prelude I have in D minor with the dropped D and it definitely has a more resonant character.  Ah priorities, how much music can I  keep adding to my practice sessions? 🤓

    • Marilyn Blodget Thanks Marilyn.  Glad you enjoyed it.  I spent about a year with Jason on Artist works learning this with him.  He said he played it in high school!

Stefanie Mosburger-Dalz Another beautiful performance. I agree with Eric, that 'If My Complaints' is a beautiful song. I have played Capt. Digorie Piper's Pavane and Galliard which are instrumental versions of that song (well, struggled thru). Thanks for bringing us this joy.

    • Jack Stewart my parents sang and played Dowland when I was a child, so I have those songs as my inner songs all my life. I cant sing anymore due to a radiojodtreatment 17 years ago, but I could do it as I was young;-)

  • I wanted to sing a song of the first master of pop songs for you, the father of lovesongs the one and only John D., but I was disturbed and spontaniously lost my sightreading abilities, but the film is so funny and so typical for us...

Stefanie Mosburger-Dalz Very nice, Stefanie - thanks for posting! It occurs to me that this is exactly how Dowland would have expected his music to be performed - not, as is now so often the case, in some sterile concert hall, the audience quietly listening and applauding dutifully at appropriate moments; but in the home, by amateur musicians of varying skill and learning, sharing brief moments of joy and beauty with those around them. If you haven't seen how this music was originally published, it's worth taking a look at its 'Tafelmusik' format: https://s9.imslp.org/files/imglnks/usimg/6/64/IMSLP278939-PMLP66979-the_first_booke_of_songes_or_ayres2.pdf
