What Guitar do you play?

What is the instrument of your choice? 🎸

I play a Paco Santiago Marin - XXX Anniversario! This guitar has been with me all my university years, and I have learned so much on this instrument! It has a lot of marks, so I intend to have my top redone within the following years, but I am still in love with the sound of this instrument! But it also has its shortcomings. It’s not very easy to play, guitars with a more modern approach require much less effort!

Phill Tadman Sweet collection! They look similar, and I'm assuming they're all Spruce tops. How do they differ for you characteristically? Do you tune any of them differently?

    • Steve Pederson yes, all are spruce, standard tuning and all sound very different.   The 2007 Dean is very loud with a long sustain and lots of overtones - a ‘modern’ sound. The Vailati sound is very crisp, the easiest to play  - sounds a bit like a Domingo Esteso from the 1930s. The Dean Hauser has a very pure sound with few overtones and a very deep bass - Bach sounds wonderful on it

  • The only classical guitar I have ever owned is my 1973 Hernandez Grade No 1A that I bought used in 1989 for $600. I know it is nothing special, but it is very special to me. I do own a steel-string acoustic and an inexpensive renaissance lute, but 95% of the time I play, I'm playing my Hernandez.

    • Martin You're very kind! 🙂

I used to be very into cycling. I owned a fairly good bike. A guy I rode with once in a while owned a bike that cost a small fraction of what mine cost (it even had a kickstand!), but he'd always blow me away at the end of the ride when we started speeding things up. I'd arrive at the finish, and he was always there way before me, and he'd smile and ask if I wanted to borrow his bike on the next ride. 🚲

Eric Phillips That's so awesome that you've kept the same guitar! I think my first classical was a Yamaha. When my grandmother passed I got a little bit of money to do with as I wished, so I bought an Esteve for about $400 from Guitar Center. I used that to record my classical guitar album back in 2005. Later I sold it in a yard sale to try to get some money to put towards a nicer guitar. I sometimes regret selling that guitar. 🙁

Some months ago, I was fortunate enough to record this beauty. Can you guess the luthier?

btw, Steve Pederson , I'm waiting for a full presentation of your armory!

Phill Tadman You are correct! It is an original Torres!

Nipun Deshpande Yes it is! I was not allowed to touch it though, but we've done a video recording with it, which I'll attach!

Steve Pederson It sounded delicious, haven't tasted it though!

    • Martin Do you think the owner would be willing to trade it for my 1973 Hernandez Grade 1A? I'd even throw in the case for free.

I play a ramirez 4e, it's a beautiful guitar. I've owned it for about 12 years.  For my 40th birthday i promised myself i would upgrade to a hand built concert guitar,  but i played quite a few and none of them sounded any better than my ramirez... so i bought a fender strat instead... crazy move?

  • I’m playing a Rene Baarslag. Dutch born luthier in Granada. 1993. Spruce top, Indian rosewood. I’ve played it from its early days and we are very close.

    • Blaise Laflamme sûre, I’ll try again. I have a poor internet connection here. Even uploading the photo didn’t work. Also I can’t follow the livestreams . Picture 2 shows the 0-fret as well as the seventh string, added by a luthier in Delft, Ronny Lieuw. I love the nicely balanced spruce tone of this guitar. Although I would be very happy to own a good cedar instrument for certain pieces. As well as a romantic guitar….. but you can’t have everything.

    • joosje thank you for sharing some pictures, that's a beautiful instrument. I'm currently doing the opposite, using a Cedar I can't wait to get a Spruce one! Yeah network connections are not always that great and content is more and more heavy.
