Edmund Great, Edmund. I have heard a lot of Scott Tennant's Pumping Iron. It gets a lot of mentions here. I am mostly familiar with Mertz' Schubert song transcriptions, especially Standchen which I used to play.  I have heard some of his character pieces but have never tried them.

    • Edmund I always wanted to try Pumping Nylon but I play carbon strings 😅... joke aside, what are you working on from Mertz?

    • Jack Stewart I think «Pumping Iron» is the book following the original «Pumping Nylon» but for steel string guitar 🤣.

Blaise Laflamme Haha, nice one… gotta love music humor!

I never got around to playing Mertz back in undergrad days, so I’ve been learning the Tarantelle, a Romanze, and reading through a bunch of the others.  Not every piece hits but there are some real gems in this Bardenklange collection.  Also, I really enjoyed Marco Tamayo’s video here on Tonebase on the Tarantelle, he’s an amazing interpreter.

    • Edmund You're right about this Collection, I've read a bit through it in the past but never managed to set on a piece to complete. For sure the Tarantelle is one of Mertz's hit, I hope you'll share one here at some point!

  • Tedesco D Major concerto, going back to some Carlevaro, and lots of chamber music.

Dave McLellan Wow! That is some heady stuff! Other than the Preludios Americanos (sic?), the only Carlevaro I am familiar with are pieces I have heard Dale and the other members present here. His music seems quite challenging both musically and technically but very interesting. Anything involving other musicians, much less an orchestra, is beyond me. I would love to hear some of your chamber works if you ever record them.

BTW what is your notebook indicating?

    • Dave McLellan great choice of concerto, do you intend to play with an orchestra, recording or piano?

    • Jack Stewart The Carlevaro is book 4 of exercises, back to it after some years away.

the notebook is my practice log, planned work a day ahead (sometimes 2 or 3 days ahead), and tracking progress. I keep track of every minute I practice.

    • Blaise Laflamme This is my third lifetime visit to the Tedesco.  1) junior in college, 2) five years ago with two local orchestras, and 3) this year with one local pro orchestra, and again with my community orchestra (I'm the timpanist normally).  I did perform it 7 times with 3 different pianists in prep for the orchestra gig in March.  what an adventure that was!

    • Dave McLellan what a journey with this concerto, if you ever have a chance to record one of your upcoming performance that'd be great to listen to it!

    • Blaise Laflamme hey thanks for your interest.  the recent performance in early march with the Claflin Hill Symphony of Milford MA was recorded by local cable TV. as soon as they post it, I can send a link.   I have video and audio from 5 years ago also; not quite as good an orchestra as the one I just played it with.

  • While I am currently away from San Francisco,  traveling in France for a month, back home waiting for me are Carlevaro's sonata Cronomias and his Estudio No. 2.

Dale Needles Those are tough pieces to let lie dormant for a month! 😧

I am worried that when I pick up my guitar after our 2 week vacation I will think, 'Have I ever played this instrument before?'. But then I have a similar response trying to tie my shoes after wearing sandals all summer.🙄

    • Jack Stewart LOL sandals.   I always have the same concern after even 1 day off.  Approach it with a sense of exploration first -- let your hands, arms and shoulders, and your back tell you what you should do first.
