  • Hey everyone!

Figured I would ask this popular question, since it is always interesting to hear what people are listening to and attending!

    I will start:

Technically the last concert I went to was the tonebase community concert! Was so awesome to hear and see all of the talented members of our community playing - can't wait for next month's Springtime Recital!

You can still sign up, via the forums!

But more recently I went to see the Sequoia Symphony perform a concert consisting of

    GALA FLAGELLO | VITALITY
PRICE | PIANO CONCERTO IN ONE MOVEMENT
    BEETHOVEN | SYMPHONY NO. 3

the pianist was Joshua Mhoon, conductor was Bruce Kiesling, and the concert was fantastic!

I haven't heard Beethoven's 3rd symphony in a while, so it was great to imagine how revolutionary it was for its time: the offbeats, syncopations, and dissonances!

Stephanie Jones Solo Classical Guitar concert in Sydney Australia on 15 February 2025. She is a wonderfully virtuosic player whose enunciation, phrasing and colouring of the music she brings to the guitar, offers new light to this great instrument! Being a fan of Latin American / South American repertoire, I particularly enjoyed her selection of pieces in this genre. For those who may have the opportunity to see Stephanie in the future, I highly recommend her concert to everyone in Tonebase.

Harry Dubiel I was really excited when Salonen became the music director of the SF Symphony in 2020. I saw his all Stravinsky program featuring The Rite and Symphony of Psalms. It was spectacular. I am really saddened that he has resigned from the SF Symphony at the end of this season. One of my favorite conductors.

    • Jack Stewart oh yeah that is not great for sure. Selfishly I was hoping Salonen came to the CSO.

I saw Marko Topchii at an Omni Foundation concert in San Francisco earlier this month. (fellow TBer Dale Needles and his wife, Suzanne were in attendance as well.) Topchii is a phenomenal guitarist and musician. The highlight was a transcendent performance of Bach's BWV 826 Keyboard Partita #2.

The week before I saw Jeremy Denk with the Takasc String Quartet performing Beethoven's Op.18.1 String Quartet and Brahms op 34 Piano Quintet (w/ Denk). Wonderful concert as well.

Non-classical concert was in Brooklyn with a band called Vomit Fist (seriously), a band fronted by Nick Didkovsky, who is a well-known "avant" electric guitarist who I have been friends with forever.

Last classical guitar concert was Hao Yang in Manhattan, which was put on by the New York Classical Guitar Society. I also was supposed to see Leonela Alejandro in person a few weeks ago, but it was really cold outside and I ended up watching the livestream.

  • Segovia 1983 , 90th birthday. Got backstage after the concert and asked a few questions about M.Castelnuovo-Tedesco Suite. He turned to the 2nd movement and taping the page said “very beautiful “. He then autographed it.

A beautiful moment and that was it for me.

  • Dec. 13, 2024 - Beat, Adrian Belew, Steve Vai, Tony Levin and Danny Carey performing 1980s King Crimson; Oklahoma City. Incredible show. Too loud for my aging ears, thank God for earplugs. Worth the decibels to see and hear Tony Levin. Vai was a gas too.
