The second A section of "Georgia."
Transcribing this recording made me appreciate how much easier some of this is nowadays. I remember trying to do the same thing by slowing down records or a tape deck and then having to transpose the notes to the correct pitch. And all the back and forth would wreck the album or tape. Now, I have a free app that can cut something to 1/4 speed and loop it in pitch.

Steve Price Great, Steve. This is sounding very good.
So you are picking this out by ear from a John Scofield recording? That is impressive, even if you are using an app to slow down. I've done that on a fingerstyle piece and it still took me forever to get a 'reasonable' version.

Jack Stewart Thanks, Jack. Thankfully this one is slow and very spacious so it's a little easier to pick out the notes. Now, if it was his usual self playing a bunch of fast double stops with that overdrive and heavy chorus, forget about it.

Steve Price Nice Steve, I find you never forget a piece when you learn it by ear. Never heard Scoffield's version, but took a crack at Lenny Breau's version. It's an impressive display of on the spot composition.

Hand - Elegy for a King (Mar 11)
Here is today's update of this piece. The biggest difference is that I am playing it from memory. I also found what I think is a nice fingering improvement through the use of a hinge barre (it is around 1:19). I didn't execute it perfectly in this video, but when done right, it really helps to keep the melody legato.

Hi, folks! In this first week I was reading and remembering a piece I studied in 1986, I guess. It's Scherzino, from Abel Carlevaro, and I like it very much. This turn I'll post just 39 measures, but I hope I can prepare as well to post in the Carlevaro's School Of Guitar Group. Thanks for listening!

Andrew York's Squares Suspended Take 1 Memorized one shot. Need to up the tempo a bit more, tighten up the slurs and hammer on. Major clam on ending, wow and new strings would be nice. Constructive critic always accepted.

Michael Shirk That was great, Michael. It seems to me that this piece works at that tempo nicely. I don't know it so perhaps a bit faster would be nice as well. However, this tempo gives it a very wistful quality. Great job.

Michael Shirk It's beautiful, Michael. I like the relaxed feel you have. Your melody line is very expressive. There were a few places where the melody seemed to cut short a bit early, but not having the score to see, maybe sustaining it was not possible.

Michael Shirk Really magnificent Michael! I thought it was absolutely beautiful, and as Jack Stewart said, the tempo works nicely as well. Since you asked for constructive criticism, I would just suggest trying to eliminate a bit of the string squeaking. This seems like the kind of piece that is very exposed, which makes those string squeaks more pesky to deal with. You got this! I love it.

Steve Pederson thanks Steve, good advice, yes pesky string noise is always my concern , I will work on that. Once I put new strings on it will be more exposed.
