End of the Year Challenge: "Showcase Your Progress!"

🌟 Challenge: Share the Pieces You've Mastered This Year!

🎸 Who's Invited? All Community Members!

📆 Duration: Now until January 12th!

🔥 The Mission: As the year draws to a close, it's the perfect time to reflect on your musical journey. We invite each of you to participate in our "End of the Year Challenge" by showcasing the pieces you have learned and mastered over the year. Whether it's a piece you've polished to perfection or one you've just started feeling comfortable with, we want to see it all! If you don't want to record yourself, show us a video of a piece you plan to take on in the next year!

🎶 END OF THE YEAR COMMUNITY CONCERT: Together with our friends from tonebase piano, cello, violin, and flute, we will create an unforgettable event  on Dec 18th at 9 am PST!

📺 Watch Party: On January 17 at 11 am PST, we will watch beautiful submissions from this challenge!

How to Participate:

  1. Select Your Piece(s): Choose one or more pieces that you've learned this year. It could be something you've practiced through our live streams, a personal favorite, or a challenging piece you've conquered.
  2. Record Your Performance: Film yourself playing your selected piece(s). Quality doesn't have to be professional – it's all about sharing your progress and passion.
  3. Share Your Journey: Post your video in our community forum under the "End of the Year Challenge" thread. Include a brief write-up about your experience learning the piece – what challenges you faced, how you overcame them, and what this piece means to you.
  4. Engage with Others: Watch, comment, and encourage your fellow community members. Share your feedback, experiences, and celebrate each other's progress.

Let's Celebrate Our Musical Growth Together!

Remember, this challenge is about celebrating your journey, growth, and the beautiful community we've built together. Every participant, regardless of skill level, is a vital part of this celebration. Let's make these last days of the year resonate with the music we've all worked so hard on!

🎶 Join the challenge and let your music shine! 🌟

  • Hi  martin I'm very keen to participate. Do we post only one video of a final recording in this challenge or multiple videos showing progress throughout the challenge?

Nijwm Bwiswmuthiary Absolutely multiple videos!! This is not a challenge to present the finished pieces, but what you have been working on over the course of the year!

    • martin Sounds great. I've been working on Julia Florida and Prelude No.1 by Villa Lobos. Tough pieces in different ways. I'm struggling with the LH stretches of Julia Florida, that are quite nasty and challenging. Wondering if this piece is way beyond my technical abilities and perhaps I should put it in a wishlist to tackle in the future. But it's such a beautiful, adorable piece that I've fallen in love with and I can't stop myself trying to learn it, despite the challenges. I'll try to post videos soon.

Vilio Celli Great start Vilio. These are really nice pieces. I immediately thought back to Rodrigo's Gentlehombre Concerto. I listened to it a lot when I started classical guitar in the early 70's but haven't heard it in a long time. I'll have to go listen to it again.

      Good to see you again.

Enjoy  .....all your comments are wellcome..greetings

    • JUAN ALONSO very nice job, I enjoyed your interpretation!

It's a wonderful piece, which I also attempted to learn many years ago, and as it happens, I spend some time as well this year to work on it.

  • Hi there! I’ve spent a couple of days studying the prelude from the 1st JS Bach Cello suite.

It reminds the times when I first heard Yo Yo Ma playing the original piece for cello many years ago.

For me the most challenging thing is keeping the tempo steady as it usually should be for baroque music. Also dynamics and keeping the tones clean without making any mistake (I have like 3 mistakes in the video, but it is the best I could get so far).

    Here it is: https://youtu.be/KIQXLgP-dbo?feature=shared

I hope it counts! Cheers everyone.

    • Francisco Portillo fine playing! very fine.

which arrangement do you play? I bought one of Tilman Hoppstock but have not really worked on it, just sometimes played it from the score with my typical interruptions ...thank you for sharing!

    • Stefanie Mosburger-Dalz thank you so much for you comment, I really appreciate it :)
The arrangement I'm playing is based on this one. However, I don't follow it note by note on purpose. In 2nd half of bars 8, 14 and 15, for example, I replace the repeating note/silence by the loose 5th A string to create more bass movement (it's a modification of the original). I probably didn't attach to the same fingerings as well. Some references that inspired me to study and put my own flavour on it:
      Julia Lange: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7WMnJoauL8
      Tariq Harb: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rZCFzws5i0
And of course I've been listening to the different recordings from the grand master Yo Yo Ma for about 20 years now I guess: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1prweT95Mo0.
I hope that helps you! Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year!

    • Francisco Portillo thank you for the information! I love the first suite, played the second suite on cello and often go back to the first, or to the bourrees of the third. Hope to learn the third soon on cello
