Bogdanovic Monk-A-Ning a slightly less rough draft.... I think

So I have managed to squeeze in a somewhat improved version of this Bogdanovic piece from his Book of Unknown Standards V.1. This is composed in the style of Theolonius Monk (quite successfully I think).

I have recently returned from a 2 week road trip with my wife and have managed to get this piece back to this level ,at least. My nails continue to plague me, but I continue to hope. There are still rough spots and my tone drives me nuts but I feel this is reasonably solid as a rough draft.

      Moyses Lopes Thanks Moyses.

Bill Kanengiser has recorded v. 1. I thought he had recorded v.2 also but I can't find that, so maybe not.

    • Jack Stewart what a fun piece. Beautiful, Jack. Well played! It must be quite a challenge in its own way. I don’t think I could ever do this. Great achievement so far. Btw, do you have any special, personal connection with Balkan, Serbian culture? Just out of curiosity. I lived in Belgrade in the early 2000’s and I was a guest (also sponsor) at the first Belgrade International guitarArtfestival, and, of course, Bogdanovic was many times the hero of the festival. It was then, also, that I heard a 12yr or so girl, named Sabrina Vlascalic, play his Kalajdzisko Oro in a masterclass. Incredible…

I had some lessons in those  days with a great guitarist, named Srdjan Tosic, I share a link to a Novi Sad festival where he, too, played Bogdanovic’ works https://youtu.be/evKk_W8Tdv4 (skip the intro by a local TV host)

joosje Thanks, Joosje.  It is certainly a fun piece.... well, on those rare moments when I have it under control. I find it quite challenging because it is relentless and the chromatic counterpoint can be difficult to control. But it is also very rewarding. There is still much work to be done but it is coming along.

I don't have any personal connection to the Balkans and/or Serbian culture, though I found the music very interesting from early on. I had a Nonesuch recording back in the late 60's / early 70's that included music by a Balkan women's choir that was fascinating and beautiful. I would love to visit the region, and perhaps will now that I am retired. Your experience there sounds amazing. And to have seen Sabrina Vlascalic at such a young age! I was not aware of her until after her untimely death on her bike. Tonebase has a couple of wonderful lessons by her - En los Trigales and de Falla's Homage. The clip you shared of her is from her Triages lesson which I referred to when I was working on it.

I am very envious of your experiences in Belgrade and the level of instructors you have had access to. It seems to me that that region has become a major center for classical guitar.

    • Jack Stewart Wow, I didn't know about Sabrina Vlascalic. I just spent a couple of weeks going through her lesson on En Los Trigales. Really a remarkable talent and a great teacher.

Steve Price I think I learned about he death when I was going thru her Triages lesson. I kept noticing on her YT video that the comments kept saying RIP. I found out she was hit by a car while riding her bike. Sad and shocking.

  • Unrelated to this challenge, but am I crazy or was there a message sent out about a partnership with D'Addario for Tonebase members? I thought I saw something about some discounts but I can't find anything now.

Steve Price I don't think you're crazy Steve. I seem to remember something about that as well, but I don't remember the specifics. I think, though, it may just have been somebody mentioning that D'Addario has a string club or something.
