Week 3: Fasten your Seatbelts!

Eric Phillips It was originally for piano. He has a couple of sets of shorter piano works and some of them seem to be able to sit on the guitar pretty well. I'm not sure that "In the Hall of the Mountain King" would work, but some of his simpler pieces do okay I think.

Eric Phillips I'm on it, give me a couple of days, lol. Years ago I was in a sheet music shop and stumbled on Kazuhito Yamashita's arrangements of Dvorak's complete 9th Symphony and Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" for solo guitar. I had to buy them not because I could ever play them or would really ever want to, but because the idea was so insane. I found the recordings later and they are interesting.

Steve Price yes, very nice Steve! Beautiful piece, nicely played. I actually did a search for a guitar version of "In the Hall of the Mountain King" for guitar. There were several.

Steve Price Have you seen/watched Jorge Caballero play "Pictures" and the Dvorak?  He does a terrific job.  I saw him perform these in person, but there are also Youtube videos of it.

Steve Price Well done.  A very lyrical piece and beautiful rendition.  You are probably aware of Julian Bream's transcription of the "Three Lyric Pieces" by Edvard Grieg.  I played them many many years ago and remember them fondly.

Steve Price Thank you Steven!  I really enjoyed your performance.  This is totally new to me. While I was listening, I was envisioning him composing in his little hut by the edge of the lake.

Dale Needles Thanks, Dale. I'd heard of those pieces, but never put it together that they were transcriptions of Grieg. I'll have to check them out. Thanks for the tip. 

Marilyn Blodget Thanks a lot, Marilyn. I'd never seen that place before and it really does give context to a lot of his music. Thanks for sharing that. 

Steve Price Jorge Caballero also did his own transcriptions (unpublished) of selections from the Albeniz Iberia suite.  He did a  recording on YouTube using Julian Bream's Hauser.  It's amazing.  I asked him a few times about publishing it, but he never got it done.  I'm quite disappointed about that (I love the music) . Oh well....
