Recording Discussion Club

Thank you so much for your enthusiasm in the forum and in the live streams, I hope the tonebase academy recording course was as educational for you as it was inspirational for me! 🧙‍♂️

I urge you to put all the techniques you have learned over the course of this five weeks into regular practice, your recordings will only get better, you will discover more details and nuances not only in the technical process but also in your performance. I kept highlighting how important recording is as a feedback tool for yourself, listening back to your performance with an objective distance gives you great insight into your musical personality!

I created this topic as hub for all of your recordings you want to share in the future, I will post recordings of myself and of other musicians in here for you to enjoy, discuss and learn from! If you have any questions to the videos, feel free  to post them as a reply to the video, if you have general questions on one of the lesson topics, post them in the dedicated forum topic to create a shared knowledge base for each of the topics!

The recording doesn't need to be a video, you can only share an audio file with us as well!

When share your recording, let us know about your mic placement, your editing and your signal processing with this template:

martin What a lovely ballad! And what an amazing recording. Thank you so much, Martin, for sharing this here with us! For me, this shows the essence of music (listening and playing) in a very condensed form, the whole soul and spirit and emotion... And also the essence of this platform!
Furthermore, I want to thank M&M (Mircea and Martin 🙂) for their incredible enthusiasm here and their engaged and massive input here! This is absolutely amazing, from day to day and week to week... And the recording course is so fantastic (but I am lagging a bit behind in practice waiting for a new mic...)! Thanks for sharing all the knowledge and for showing us all the things in a comprehensive, easy-to-follow, well documented and very enjoyable format and way! 🎉🙏🎵

    • martin so beautiful. Thank you for sharing this with us. . I want to say how much I appreciated this course, your efforts to explain and help us explore the possibilities. It was a bit too much and too fast for me, because I miss any basic experience. I will surely watch the recorded sessions later on, and experiment, as soon as I have some decent hardware. Thank you Martin, and Mircea, too, for your dedication to the tonebase community.

Thank you for all you help! I would like to know how to use the insight 2 plugin in reaper - is there a simple explanation to use the spectral analysis? I do not know how to open the file in Insight 2 to view the spectrogram

David You need to insert "Insight 2" as the last plugin in your master channel, there you can specify what you can see. It is not the RX restoration suite that I used for all my post-analyzing, though, but Insight is a great Plugin for all that is going on within your DAW!

David I made you a short video tutorial on how to insert Insight 2 and how to operate it! (I messed up the screen recording a little bit, but I hope there's all the info you need!). Let me know if there is something else you need to know :)

    • Giuseppe Gasparini Hi Martin, here is today's work, recorded with ZOOM H4n, inserted in Reaper, with single tracks as you taught us, first I used De noise, because there was some noise (my wife's television) equalized with Pro- Q3 (fabFilter) I don't buy (too expensive) for the Acon Digital Verberate Basic2 Reverb (free) I followed your directions a bit and went a bit by ear, With Davinci Resolve I did the synchronization, transitions, the titles and in the end I also cleared it up, because they were a bit dark, I'm waiting for some advice and thank you for these lessons (I hope there are others)

Giuseppe Gasparini Bellissima! This is wonderful and truly inspirational! You made such a progress during the tonebase recording course, wonderful! I also like that you experimtented with different titles and transitions, this is a great way to get familiar with a piece of software like DaVinci!

Your EQ and Reverb are really good, maybe you can try to do a little less of the de-noise, that way the quality of your audio signal remains better! I can hear the FIR-filter sometimes fighting very strong against the noise 💪

    Hi Martin,

Here is a rough recording of Serenata Espanola by Malats.  Please excuse the performance as it needs lots of work (Several mistakes).  I wanted to submit something with some range and density for your evaluation  of recording sound.

This is recorded with 2 Line Audio CM4 Mics in ORTF position.  The Stereo bar is about arm's length from top of guitar (1964 Jose Ramirez with Cedar top and RC Recital medium tension strings)

Interface is the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2.  Gain on both channels up to about 70%.

No editing or dynamics processing were performed..Thanks!!!

    Best,

    Barney

Barney Hi Barney, unfortunately you only shared the reaper project without the wav files! Make sure to either export your recording or to include all the referenced files in your project! There are actually certain workflows where it is necessary to share a whole project, so there are multiple settings in the preferences that assure that all the referenced files are always placed within project folder (I just don't know these settings right now, sorry).
