  • Mertz - Op 13 An Malvina (May 12)

I decided to try this well-known piece next. I have always liked it, but looking at all those endless sixteenth notes on the page would scare me off. Once I actually tried playing it, though, it wasn’t too bad. Lots of open strings.

This piece seems very representative of the style of this era. There is lots of room for rubato and ultra-expressive playing. I'm sorry I messed up the ending so badly. I'll keep working on this.

    • Eric Phillips this is romantic guitar! an all time favorite! you’re doing a great job. Beautifully played, very musical. It’s a pure joy listening to your interpretation. Yes there’s work to do. played  by heart this kind of music will seem  easier, more natural, maybe  (even) more free in rubato,. But I agree with Jack Stewart great level interpretation .

    • joosje Thank you, Joosje. I will keep working. Memorizing music is difficult for me, and when it does happen, it's more unintentional. We'll see if that happens for me with this piece.

Eric Phillips Great choice and wonderful interpretation, Eric! Well-known pieces are a bit more challenging to play, I guess. But it's not a problem for you. Thank you for sharing!

  • Mauro Giuliani's Opus 46 Choix de Mes Fleurs Chéries - "Le Rose,"  part 2

Finally found some time to work on the second half of this little gem. Still working out a more sensitive use of Rubato.  I think I will go back and do some slow metronome practice to really embed the pulse in my mind and then return to a more emotional expression. The final arpeggiated section in mms. 53-53 could cry out for an accelerando and will work on that as the notes become more comfortable.

I've started working up Fernando Sor's Cantabile #3 from his 6 Bagatelles Op. 43 as well as work on Paganini's Romanza from the Grand Sonata and hope to have some snippets up by Sunday.

Vilio Celli Well played. I don't know why (maybe the lyrical quality of the music?), but Mertz's music really appeals to me.
