Welcome to tonebase!

Hey everyone - this is Igor from tonebase 🙂!

It's such a pleasure to welcome you as one of the founding members of the tonebase community. Please introduce yourself in a post below with the following format:

  • Where are you from and what's your favorite food from there? ;)
  • What are you currently working on?
  • What are you hoping to get out of this community?

I'll go first:

  • While it's hard to pinpoint where exactly I'm from, lol, I just go with Bavaria Germany, and as favorite food, I'd choose Beer (surprise, surprise - closely followed by "Schweinshaxe" - Bavarian Pork-knuckle, which is quite delicious, but sooo heavy that it feels weird calling it favorite food)
  • Trying to keep my Aranjuez in the fingers, even though certainly don't have that much time to practice as during college days...
  • I hope we can facilitate authentic and interesting discussions around playing, learning, teaching, performing the guitar as well as all adjacent topics like concert prep, professional development, auditioning etc...

Now over to you (after some participation from our tonebase team members!)

I am a 74 year old retired architect now living in amazing Southern Utah. I've been playing off and on for over 50 years but only for my own entertainment. I have no aspirations of becoming the best guitar player in town, entertaining friends and family, or having a impressive repertoire. I typically practice only an hour or so a day on pieces I've played for years. I would like to master a couple of songs one being Traumerei by Shumann played best by Andres Segovia. Una Americana by Magin Alegre is also of intrest to me. My favorite composer has to be Fernando Sor because he wrote so many simple yet beautiful short songs and also Julian Arcas. I am most impressed by the music of Carles Trepat from Spain. I am self taught so I have a lot of questions and issues that need to be resolved. For example, how is a pedal note best handled as far as accent and volume. Although there is are tons of information I would like to know here at tonebase, I'm not sure it will be what I am looking for. AI has no soul so how can an app really understand what I want to accomplish even with the most explicit instructions. I'll try it for a while and see if get the enough value for the price according to my guitar needs, wants, and desires and perhaps I'll get to know some like-minded guitar players.

Welcome, Samuel! I am no expert on Sor, just a huge fan of his music. I would definitely say that David knows much more about him than I do. I find that when I am feeling a lack of motivation, I can always pull out some piece by Sor (usually his simpler pieces) and get a shot in the arm.

You're too modest, Eric! And you've played some pretty challenging pieces by Sor - not least the beautiful study from opus 29 that you shared during the last challenge. As for 'expertise' - well, I suppose we could concede that we're neither in the class of a real 'expert' like Brian Jefffrey.

Hello. Sitting on my back porch. Just finished an hour and a half practicing right hand planting and slow arpeggios. Worked on slowly Lagrima and Adelina. I look forward to getting more involved in the site. I’m fairly new a couple of weeks. I have been on other sites over the past two years and discovered tone base. I really really like it. I’m retired and have more time to play.

    From Santa Rosa Ca

favorite food…fish and chips from Fishatarian in Bodega

I’m just starting classical guitar. Been playing acoustic/electric then Bass. Now time for the big league.

just started scales with my guitar teacher

struggling with choice of guitar. Have a beautiful sounding Alhambra that’s tough to reach with small hands used to smaller necks. Resisting crossover as I love the sound of classical guitars made in Spain

Welcome to ToneBase, Ronni! I would stick with the guitar you have for the first while. You may find you become more comfortable with the neck as you get more accustomed to it. (A wide neck actually makes certain aspects of playing easier.) How are your lessons going? Have you looked at the 'beginner's course' here at ToneBase? You might find that helpful as a supplement to what you are doing with your teacher.

    Hi

    Vegas these days

I am trying to comeback to guitar at ~15 year break(injury).  So I spent half the day setting up new(used) guitar with lower action and strings.  Now I have to figure out where to start.  I had a quick look around the site and plan to just start at level one, and see how quick/slow my old chops come back.

It would be cool to find a guitar path to follow, and connect with some new guitar friends.

Welcome to the community, Mike! Were you playing classical guitar in the past? (If not, you might find the 'beginner's course' here useful.) I hope you'll join us in the general forum, which is the best way to connect with other guitarists here. A new 'challenge' will be starting in a few days - the theme will be 'unfinished business'. (Coming back to the guitar after fifteen years definitely qualifies!)
