Dynamics, Texture, and Balance (June 2nd) Questions / Suggestions

Hi everyone!

'Bring out the melody' is often sound advice. But just how much should we bring it out? Does that mean playing the melody louder or the accompaniment quieter? Are dynamics absolute or relative? What's the most important voice in a four part texture? How should we shape our phrases dynamically?

So much which goes into answering these questions relies on our knowledge of the musical language or 'grammar' by using principles that are often not in the score. During this session, we will survey a wide range of musical extracts to explore how a few simple ideas can help us navigate questions about dynamics, texture, and balance to infuse our performances with a sense of musical purpose.
