Week 3: Draft // Apr 5th
Welcome to Week 3! This week we focused on form, setting parameters, and drafting in aims of completing more short pieces.
The assignment for this week is to blueprint (plan) our ideas into whole pieces (arch map, graphic drawing, text) and complete at least 1 rough draft.

Here is my first draft (Lullaby)
Things I found easy: the idea appeared out of nowhere and suddenly, right away, ready in my head...
Things I found difficult: it was difficult (and still is!) to "fine-tune" details such as individual chords and overall playability (I didn't want to write something extremely difficult, but also too easy - it's hard to balance these elements ...)

Hear is my imitation piece called Lindya. It imitates the piece Maria Luisa by Julio Sagreras. I attach both my piece and the piece being imitated. I also try to play my piece and the original one. What I imitate is the form ABA and the 3/4 time signature. It has a dance-like motif. The key of the A part is an Aminor, and B part changes to C major. My B part does not sound like the B part of Maria Luisa. It sounds more like Carulli or Carcassi - the very classic period. It is a strang experimental mix, though. :) I would appreciate any feedback for my draft. Thank you! :)

To be honest, I always laugh at my Lindya piece above when I hear the B-section. It does not match with the A-section in terms of musically or motif, etc The A-section seems to be lyrical, singable. The B part is just random notes and scale putting in a key of C major :)

Khiem Nguyen I like it but in my opinion I would have liked the B section to be longer (maybe even just repeated) maybe develop it a bit more. It's a nice contrast to the A section. Nicely played also!

Khiem Nguyen Nice work on this one! Its a very solid piece, although I guess a slightly longer B section might be nice but overall I think it is great how it is :)

Derek and Ashley (Ash) Lucero , thank you so much for your great feedback and encouragement. I totally agree with you. After hearing it again, I find that the B section feels short. And I have just tried to count the number of measures: B has only 8, while A has 16 measures. It is a huge unbalance. Now I consicously know that good music usually have a balance in length (at least) among sections. I will develop the B section a bit more to 16 measures and upload again and hope you can continue give me your feedbacks. :)

I'm jumpin' on the train with ya'll! I came up with this idea just playing around with the "mood" of Chopin's Mazurkas. None of it really makes sense yet, but as you. can see I wrote ideas sporadically from start to finish. This is a very VERY rough draft idea, but a good example of how to start :)

Ashley (Ash) Lucero The idea of "blueprint" is great, but why is there nothing left of blueprint at the end of my writing? I don't know what I'm doing wrong ... I follow the idea and somehow it goes on like that outside the project. I don't control the notes - rather the notes control me

Marek Tabisz Hehe, sometimes that's how it is isn't it, you have all these fantastic plans, you've plotted your course on Google maps perfectly, and then for some reason you wander off on a different...
I think it's quite natural as you go discovering more of the details of what your musical ideas are for the piece are. I think part of the what the blueprint helps with is just to clarify your macro ideas further, and as you go writing more and more pieces (please!), you become clearer on the relationships between the two.

Marek Tabisz I know exactly how you feel with this! Many times I have felt the frustration of a lost vision. Just remember, the act of finishing something brings you ever closer to the day when you are experienced enough to maintain your vision. And also, we must be thankful that our process can be a bit unpredictable!

Ashley (Ash) Lucero You are right! After a few days of participating in week 3 of the challenge, a sack of ideas that I didn't suspect myself had opened up. It's exciting and frustrating at the same time - either I can't write it all down, or I'll put all the ideas in one piece and it'll be completely pointless and family life will be crushed. Once again - thank you for your support!

Hi everybody, here is my Lulaby piece. I would appreciate your feedback. :) I was wanting to make the melody more soft and sweet, but ended up making another valse in 3/4. Hence the name "Little dancing piece". I think it has a classical color like Carulli :)
Things I find difficult: It is difficult to come up with a Nice, soft Melody that can put a baby to sleep. I tried with a time signature of 6/8, but I can't come up with a rythm that can put a baby to sleep, yet.

Ashley (Ash) Lucero thank you Ashley. I have never composed anything before rather than two pieces for week 3 assignments . I tend to think a 6/8 signature will provide a lyrical melody, soft and narrative but I struggle to come up with a melody. I would like to try again with 6/8.
