Week 3: Draft // Apr 5th
Welcome to Week 3! This week we focused on form, setting parameters, and drafting in aims of completing more short pieces.
The assignment for this week is to blueprint (plan) our ideas into whole pieces (arch map, graphic drawing, text) and complete at least 1 rough draft.

All right, here's my first draft of bad music, or rather batshit music.
A variation on La Folia.
I'm surprised it went pretty much as planned.
I'll try and get some sort of recording together soon.

Ok, I worked on the assignment this week and found it very hard. I had such great ideas, 😉 but whenever I was a tiny bit ambitious I got stuck when it came to the development of the initial themes and motifs. (I was halfway with a fancy for John Dowland, couldnt finish...)
So I came up with this small piece. Started as a Lullaby, but became a Barcarole, as the 6/8 was more natural here.
What I found easy: collecting some fancy themes and motifs, drawing a chart of dynamic movements and range of pitches.
What I found difficult: well, all the rest. Most difficult for me is to find my own musical language (I am a polyglot in daily life, and a translator, so I often use other peoples words in different context. As in music, where we often play all styles and periods.) So, what I do in this course (thank you so much Ashley for this challenge!👍) is experiment in different languages.
My greatest challenge to find voicings and chords away from the purely basic, without getting lost in nowhere land.
For this piece I was inspired by Tansman. What I like best in my Barcarole is the short chord progression in high positions in the B section. What I regret is the limited tonal range in the overal piece, melodic lines a bit short and harmonic structure a bit fluffy. But it is playable....

Nothing easy about this!
Copying a legible score and creating an ending were my biggest challenges.

Hi everyone. My draft is a little "tense calm" piece inspired on Pirita Klooster (Tallin). I wanted an "ancient flavour", so I used the dorian mode, lots of pedal tones on D and a minor dominant at the end of the piece. The estructure evolved by itslef, and I used a simple motive to give it some coherence.
The difficult task was to return to the starting theme in a convincing way. I´m afraid I didn´t achieve this, but surely this is what writing a draft is about. I post a video and the score (handwrited).
