Kick-Off for "The Romantic Era"
SUPER EXCITED to step into the richest musical periods for classical guitar, the Romantic Era! 
Together, we will dive into colorful compositions by the likes of Mertz, Regondi and Mertz but surely will include compositions by our all-time-favorites Barrios, Tárrega and many more and might even discover some unknown masters!
Entering the Romantic Era! In this months Community Challenge, we are going to explore the vast beauty of guitar music from the Romantic period! Now is the time to dive into gems of the early romantic guitar repertoire by the likes of Aguado, Regondi, Mertz but also Coste, Tárrega, Sagreras, Barrios and many more! The Romantic Era as unlimited beauty to offer!
I really love paintings from the Romantic Era as well, what is your favorite one?

Awesome! This has become my favorite era of guitar music to play (and I know that Jack Stewart would say the same
). My brain is already thinking of pieces I want to work on. I might be able to attend the kick-off live. As for a favorite painting, I will confess general ignorance. Martin's choice is beautiful. I also like "The Ninth Wave" by Ivan Aivazovsky below.

Barney Haha, no need for my permission, first I stand together with Eric Phillips and can't wait or your interpretations, second I personally would count the Spanish national composer to the romantic period as well (although some refer to them being in the "post-romantic era", but then again ... can't be post-romantic without the romantic, right?)

Vilio Celli Ah, wonderful, Turner is one of my favorites, I was absolutely floored when I saw one in real life!!!

Vilio Celli I really like Turner, in fact, he is one of my favorites of any period. I looked up his place in the art periods and he is generally considered a Romantic but straddles the line between Romantic and Impressionist. So you and Eric are both covered. As I understand it, his paintings that are of a wash of color and light (generally fog, storm etc.) are very Impressionistic, but they will usually have some precisely rendered detail (the ship in the first, and the cows? in the second) which keeps his feet in the Romantic. I just skimmed one of my art books so take this with a grain of salt.

My previous post was specifically for Eric.
My favorite Romantic artists are Turner (he apparently is considered a Romantic but is also an Impressionist), Friedrich, Millet and probably at the top of my list is Daumier. Daumier is best known for his social and political drawings but he has some wonderful paintings, as well, especially on Don Quixote. The 1st is Third Class Carriage, #2 is Don Quixote and Sancho Pansa and the Dead Mule.

sorry when exactly does the romantic era starts and end? it"s kinda confusing to me.

don Hi Don, excellent question! Historically, Beethoven was the last classical composer and Schubert the first real romantic one. The end is marked by the beginning of World War II., although modern aspects have been introduced already before!
But there are still a lot of romantic composers in the 20th century like Barrios or Llobet. It's especially guitarists who have been late to the party!

Martin thanks! I'm always confuse with this. Does this mean Debussy Ravel are romantic era too?

don Wikipedia lists impressionism as modernism, I shouldn't argue too much with that. And of course, if you compare Schubert to Ravel, it is pretty obvious, but this has been a steady development!
