Etude No. 2 (Estudios Sencillos) - Leo Brouwer

When I first learned classical guitar, I thought that those rich and sweet mellow tones were the only acceptable guitar sound, but my teacher at that time told me that classical guitars could be far more colorful than I thought.

In order to show me how vast the range of timbre a classical guitar could achieve, he introduced the Estudios Sencillos to me and it really blew my mind.

These so-called "Simple Etudes" are not simple at all! I still remembered my teacher telling me something like "imagine 4 people singing in a church". Now, I can achieve the "in a church" part by adding a lot of reverb, but the "4 people singing" part... well, just forget it.😂

  joosje Thanks, Joosje. I found that when playing a piece that slow, my "rubato" mode would turn on automatically and I would tend to rush in some places, it's really hard to keep it even. 🙈

  Stefanie Mosburger-Dalz Hi Stefanie, do I correctly remember that you said you are taking online lessons from Stephanie Jones? I enjoy her music very much and follow her on Patreon. In any case, did you study this piece with her? As you know, she has a wonderful recording of it.

  Dale Needles It was like this: I learned that peace 20 years ago with Michael Bovie, who gave me lessons that time after a 20 years break of bringing up children, etc.. Then I decided that my life was better if I would not try to play guitar anymore because I practised and practised and was so unable to not making mistakes... that new break was 15 years!!!!Then I started again in 2019 with Roman who works at the scool I take lessons with my Cello, I met him and asked if I could learn with him and he said yes.. I saw Stephanie Jones playing that peace on internet, but I sweared to myself I would not open the Pandorabox until I play better;-) but I could not keep away from it and I had a lesson with Stephanie to check my fingerings with that peace one year ago, that time I was on Patreon too. Now I wanted to play it again because of the challenge. So I took it out once more, but there is a lot of work left. I decided, never to give up again;-)

  Stefanie Mosburger-Dalz Totally can relate to your story. I also took more than a twenty-year break in playing due to work commitments but am now happily back ensconced into playing again.

  Stefanie Mosburger-Dalz like Dale I also relate to your story, I slowly reduced playing over the course of a few years until I totally stopped for 8 years straight. And honestly a few months before starting back again I was sure in my mind I wouldn't play again, and then I got a strong calling back to music. Since then I'm slowly rebuilding myself as a musician and I enjoy every moment!

yesterday I made that video...it took a lot of work, still not perfect...but it is not easy although it the score looks easy......now I have to work 6 days until night so... I used the free day to play guitar;-)

  Stefanie Mosburger-Dalz Such a beautiful piece and probably one of Brouwer's most romantic pieces. As you probably know, it was written for a 1972 film under same title directed by Humberto Solás. Well done!
