  • Piece I played: Mazurka en Sol (one of my favorites that nobody has done so far)

What was easy: I love it so much that is was a joy to work on it. When I would finish it, all I'd want to do was play it again (and again, and again ...).

What was difficult: I could not get the slurs in measure 7 to sound good, so I plucked all the notes. The stretch in beat 3 of measure 21 is really hard for me. The long glissando in measure 22 was hard to pull off as well.

By the way, GSI recently released a video of Pepe Romero playing this that is fantastic. If you go listen to it, though, please don't listen to mine until much later as mine will suffer greatly in comparison!

    • Derek If someone told me I couldnā€™t play anything but Tarrega for the rest of my life, Iā€™d be upset, but Iā€™d still have plenty of joy!

    • Blaise Laflamme I am running out of intermediate pieces. Iā€™ll leave the advanced ones to the heavy hitters in the group.

  • Promise kept.

Iā€™m so grateful to Martin for bringing this challenge. Unfortunately, it wasnā€™t the best timing for me - and Tarrega is one of my favorites! I played so many of his pieces.

but here I was, packing, unpacking, (after driving from Prague to Belgium, again testing) cleaning, painting, assembling book cases ā€¦

my fingers missed the subtle touch of the strings, nails broken or damaged ā˜¹ļø

But a challenge is a challenge, so this week I took on two new pieces, and warming up with Tarrega s studies (those are great as well.)

Here is prelude  No2, as promised (and explained in my previous posting). Quite demanding for the left hand, I can tell youā€¦.
The sound quality isnā€™t ideal, but I really didnā€™t have time to work on that. Just a quick smartphone recording. Last week I received my line audio mics. Now I need to buy the interface and get the whole set organized  ā€¦ Iā€™ll get back to Martins recording course.

    But playing comes first!

    • joosje Beautiful, Joosje! That is is a difficult piece, but I can really hear the dialogue between the two voices. This piece always sounds like a father and daughter dancing to me, and I heard that in your playing.

    • Eric Phillips thatā€™s a nice metaphor, Iā€™ll keep it in mindā€¦ I actually never heard this  piece played, so I had to come up with the phrasing solutions all by my self. Iā€™ll work on it again some time.

joosje I think it sounds great Joosje! I always look forward to your playing. Tone is in the hands and even though you donā€™t have all your equipment set up you still made it sound beautiful.

  • Yeah, this is my bonus submission.

What was easy? I took a very moderate tempo and the chord progressions arenā€™t very complicated.

What was difficult? How to make the melodic material sound really lyrical and the bass notes soft and rhythmical. I didnā€™t quite live up to my goals, definitely need more than one week (Sunday-Friday in ā€˜tempo rubatoā€™ šŸ˜‰)

    • joosje I love this! I think you definitely played with the qualities you mentioned. It was so gentle and melancholic. You just put another piece on my list! šŸ™‚
