The first Canción Triste I learned was by Francisco Calleja published in 1931, and recorded by Vicente Gomez at much faster tempo. I haven’t touched that in years. Here is the piece performed beautifully by Jan Depreter. https://youtu.be/PD9RVR5xASw

Bill Young Great performances of Un día de noviembre and that version of Triste Cancion, Bill. I had not heard that one before.

Jack Stewart thank you, Jack. I had a chance to work with Rene Uzquierdo on Un día de noviembre, in masterclass and private lessons.

I was not familiar with Carlos Fariñas’ Canción Triste until I saw a video on YouTube of our dear martin ‘performing the piece. I was so mesmerized that I decided to learn it a few days before the concert. It still a “work -in-progress”. I wanted to perform the two pieces as a pair as:

      1. Both pieces were revised & fingered by Jesús Ortega (born 1935), a great Cuban guitarist/arranger/teacher/composer.

      2. Carlos Fariñas (1934-2002), together with Léo Brouwer, was one of the big Cuban Avant-Garde composers in the 1960’s.
