WEEK 2: What we've experienced!!!

WELCOME TO THE MAIN THREAD FOR THE SECOND WEEK OF "End of the Year" PRACTICE CHALLENGE!

  1. Select Your Piece(s): Choose one or more pieces that you've learned this year. It could be something you've practiced through our live streams, a personal favorite, or a challenging piece you've conquered.
  2. Record Your Performance: Film yourself playing your selected piece(s). Quality doesn't have to be professional – it's all about sharing your progress and passion.
  3. Share Your Journey: Post your video in our community forum under the "End of the Year Challenge" thread. Include a brief write-up about your experience learning the piece – what challenges you faced, how you overcame them, and what this piece means to you. If you don't want to record yourself, show us a video of a piece you plan to take on in the next year!
  4. Engage with Others: Watch, comment, and encourage your fellow community members. Share your feedback, experiences, and celebrate each other's progress.

↓ Happy Sharing! ↓

As I posted in Week I, my learnings this past year have focused on the teachings and compositions of Abel Carlevaro.  Towards that end, I am finishing off the year by completing my work on Carlevaro's Estudio No. 3 (Bicordes).  Here is the second section of the four sections into which I have divided the Estudio.

Dale Needles thank you so much! So this section is interesting, I thought it were quarts when I heard it, it reminds me of a passage of the partita in a allemande for flute solo by JSB but this here is more complex because  two voices are progressing over halfsteps, soo exiting!!!I will try out to play the first row on the second page(2/4) to the change 3/4.

Dale Needles I looked up some score in this library, is it allowed to download and print? I dont understand spanish or portugues, so I cant find out what is allowed. I looked up some arrangements, wow it is such a treasure!!!

Stefanie Mosburger-Dalz Yes, the materials in the Library are made available free. The library was compiled by Carlevaro's widow, Vani Carlevaro and his main assistant,  Alfredo Escande. Enjoy it!

Dale Needles This is really wonderful, Dale. What a complex work, musically and technically! You play with such clarity and control that you make the music very clear and expressive. I really look forward to hearing the entire piece.

    Torroba – Arada

It’s been a busy week at work and home, so I haven’t gotten a chance to post anything for a while. Today, though, I was able to make my final recording of the pieces I put into my first category for this challenge – pieces I now know pretty well, have memorized, and am pleased with how I am playing them.

Today I recorded my playing of Lullaby No. 1 by Isaias Savio.  This is from Brazil.  This piece is a work in progress for me.  I'm continuing to work on it and will post my progress before the end of this challenge.

I feel that this reasonably represents my progress for the year, which is when I joined Tonebase and proceeded through the beginner courses available, to my current playing abilities.  I have more comments on my journey and accomplishments in my practice diary if interested.

Stefanie Mosburger-Dalz Thank you for listening Stefanie.  I only heard of this piece recently as a post in these Forums and on YouTube.  I liked the sound of the piece, and given that it appears to be within my skill level, I thought it would be a good addition to my repertoire.

Jim King Great job, Jim. The melody and bass are clearly balanced, not easily achieved. Your progress is very evident and impressive. Keep it up!

Giuliani - Six Variations on Folies d'Espagne (Thema, Var. I, II, III, IV)

After the Sor's music challenge last month, I've continued my Folies journey and returned to practicing Guiliani's version. Guiliani's version is no easier than Sor's, and for me, it might even be more challenging. The octave playing in Var. IV is a real pain (I wondered how Wes Montgomery would have sounded if he played this one 😂). Currently, I can only manage to play the first four variations at a slower tempo, but I'm hoping to speed up a little bit next year.

It's my third Christmas with Tonebase, and I wanted to express my heartfelt appreciation for this lovely community that shares and plays guitar together. You guys have brought so much fun to my guitar journey, and I'm truly grateful. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Wai Bravo! Great playing! This third variation is a challenging one, ain't it? I have never tried to play this one, but now I think it will be in my 'wishlist' for 2024.

Wai super! I love these pieces, and sometimes play them out of the score but not so fluent, its worth to study them closer
