WEEK 2: What we've experienced!!!

WELCOME TO THE MAIN THREAD FOR THE SECOND WEEK OF "End of the Year" PRACTICE CHALLENGE!

  1. Select Your Piece(s): Choose one or more pieces that you've learned this year. It could be something you've practiced through our live streams, a personal favorite, or a challenging piece you've conquered.
  2. Record Your Performance: Film yourself playing your selected piece(s). Quality doesn't have to be professional – it's all about sharing your progress and passion.
  3. Share Your Journey: Post your video in our community forum under the "End of the Year Challenge" thread. Include a brief write-up about your experience learning the piece – what challenges you faced, how you overcame them, and what this piece means to you. If you don't want to record yourself, show us a video of a piece you plan to take on in the next year!
  4. Engage with Others: Watch, comment, and encourage your fellow community members. Share your feedback, experiences, and celebrate each other's progress.

↓ Happy Sharing! ↓

    Hi everyone!

Newcomer here, just adding my first two videos. I simply recorded them with my iPhone (did not have time to finish Martin's course on recording 😁), so no edits. I could not decide which piece would better describe my year in guitar (mainly the second semester).

The first one is a little tango by Piazzolla, the second one is a funny Capriccio by Mertz.

Apologies, for I haven't memorized any of these two pieces (I have such a terrible memory!).

I appreciate all comments and suggestions for improvement.

Carlo Martins I like Metz's music, but I haven't heard of this one before. It was expertly performed! Thank you for sharing it, Carlo!

Wai thank you. I myself don’t know much of his music. Do you have a favorite one?

Carlo Martins I can only play the beginner's level of his music, Nocturne Op. 4. No. 2 is one of my favorites. If you can handle more difficult pieces, maybe you should try "Schubert - Six Songs".👍

Carlo Martins These are great, Carlos. The Piazzolla has an infectious rhythm that you play wonderfully. Your Mertz Capriccio is very impressive as well. great job. And welcome to Tonebase! I am excited to hear more from you.

I regard this challenge as the tail of the new years resolutions . I was so unwary to write in those posts that I would do the Turina sonata this year. And to some extent I am happy that  I  did this in public (Tonebase) so I feel obliged to practice it all year and improve it as much as my limitations allow. Otherwise I probably would have turned to other pieces. Don't feel obliged to view or comment. I just want to fulfill my new years resolutions ;-)

  • As I posted in Week I, my learnings this past year have focused on the teachings and compositions of Abel Carlevaro.  Towards that end, I am finishing off the year by completing my work on Carlevaro's Estudio No. 3 (Bicordes).  Here is the second section of the four sections into which I have divided the Estudio.

    • Stefanie Mosburger-Dalz Andre Bernier Thanks, really appreciate your support. As you know from my posts over the past year, I am drawn to Carlevaro's more dissonant compositions and this Estudio is a good representative of that style. And, yes Stephanie, this Estudio is so guitar.  One thing you learn from playing Carlevaro's pieces or his many outstanding arrangement/transcriptions is that they flow so naturally on the guitar, even when they are difficult.

    • Dale Needles can you post the section you played as score, I would love to read!!!I would love to understand what  is happening there

    • Stefanie Mosburger-Dalz The best thing to do is go to Carlevaro Online Library where you can download the entire Estudio:  Abel Carlevaro Library (bibliotecaabelcarlevaro.blogspot.com)

However, I am also attaching a pdf of the section from this post.  I start on the bottom of the first page on the second to last measure and play through the following page.

    • Dale Needles great to hear you back Dale, this is Carlevaro's music indeed! 😅 Thanks for sharing your progress on this, I still have to look at #1 as you suggested... far from easy stuff musically and technically!

    • Blaise Laflamme Thanks, Blaise.  I do believe that the five Estudios - Homenaje a Villa-Lobos are definitely far from easy stuff as you say and, in my opinion, more difficult than his Preludios Americanos.  Hopefully, I will have this one relatively down by the end of the Challenge. I am halfway through it.
