Week 4

Attention all tonebuddies! Are you ready to embark on a journey of musical creativity and exploration? Join our Arrangement & Transcription Challenge and discover the joy of reimagining music for the classical guitar!

Over the next four weeks, we’ll celebrate the art of transforming works from other instruments, ensembles, or even genres into stunning guitar performances. From Albéniz and Granados to Piazzolla, Bach, Scarlatti, or even your own favorite songs — everything goes!

🎯 Whether you choose to:

  • Work on a well-known transcription (Albéniz’s Asturias, Granados’s Danza Española, Piazzolla’s Libertango)

  • Create your own arrangement from scratch

  • Compare different versions and share your insights

…this is your chance to dive deep into the creative process and share your journey with the tonebase community.

This challenge is open to all levels — from curious beginners discovering their first transcription to experienced players refining their own arrangements. Let’s celebrate the versatility and expressive power of the guitar together!

I'm trying some ragtime for this challenge. This is "The Easy Winners", a Scott Joplin favorite. To get the jaunty rhythm I am looking for, I found I needed to up the tempo considerably which of course makes the fingerpicking that much more challenging. Still not quite happy with it, but I think there are some good things emerging.

Thank you! These are great arrangements, although there is a better arrangement of "The Entertainer" from elsewhere that I have played for some time. The collection includes an insanely difficult "Elite Syncopations" which is on my list of items for next year to memorise and play. I am not familiar with the Grossman/Schoenberg versions...

Very enjoyable Sam. I don't think any of these pieces are easy. I have some arragements by Carlos Barbosa-Lima but I could never get to grips with them.

That's a great arrangement and really well-played. Great work. I haven't heard the name Spencer Doidge in a long time. He had a website back in the day when I was first starting with lessons and some easy arrangements. It was one of the things that got me started. Again, really nice work on this.

Thank you for the feedback! I looked around the web for Spencer Doidge - he has a very thin online presence - not sure what became of him...

I just found his YT channel which has a couple of really nice fingerstyle jazz pieces (Goodbye Pork Pie Hat and They Can Never Take That Away From Me). However they were posted 10 yrs ago.

Sometimes you are just a bit too ambitious. No problem, I keep learning. Some pieces take more than can be done in the time frame  of a TB challenge. I wanted to record the piece in one take. And did it…. still a lot of work ahead. Tomorrow I’ll be traveling, so I’m not sure if I’ll be able to make a new recording in time. But working on this one was rewarding enough.

This is coming along great, Joosje!  I love the way you balance and maintain legato for the moving bass and melody lines.  I agree a piece like this takes way longer than the Challenge time frame , and your progress and sound are amazing.

A piece like this in 4 weeks is asking a lot. I think you're at a really good place with it. It would be fun to hear you play it again after you've had a chance to live with it for a couple of months. I have the music to this somewhere and I recall giving it a cursory read through and putting it in the "maybe one day" pile. Nicely done.

This is beautiful, Joosje. You have done an amazing job getting this piece too this very high standard in such a short time. Thanks for sharing this.

That's a great piece Joosje. It looks pretty hard but it sounds like it's coming along nicely and will be a great piece after you've got it all under your fingers. Well done

Very beautiful. A piece of music doesn’t have to be played perfectly from a technical standpoint in order to move someone — and you achieved that. Many pieces have just a few bars, a few moments that really get under your skin; to me this one, and many of Bach’s pieces, consist entirely of such moments. Sooner or later i have to learn a piece by Bach as well.

Here is the complete Calambre by Astor Piazzolla, arranged for guitar by Agustin Carlevaro.  As I previously wrote, Agustin is Maestro Abel Carlevaro's older brother who was an architect by profession and an accomplished guitarist who is well known for his arrangements of Astor Piazzolla's music along with other tango composers.  Still a work in progress but I am feeling it is coming together and just needs a little time to mature.

I could tell you are having fun with this one with it's tricky syncopated rhythms and varied articulations.  I enjoyed listening to it Dale!  Thanks for posting the full version.

Wow, Dale, that is really impressive. And in such a short period of time (for such a challenging piece). There are moments that sound like Carlevaro to me, then Joe Pass - all thru the direction of Piazzola. Really fascinatiing! Thanks for presenting this. Great job.

Thanks all. I am glad you like this Piazzolla arrangement. I really think Agustin Carlevaro has a great feel for Piazzolla's music.  He was a friend of Piazzolla and it has been reported that Piazzolla was very complementary of Agustin's arrangements.  In any case, it still needs some work and hopefully I can get it to the next level over the next month.

Just wanted to sneak this one in before the end of the challenge, since I have been giving it some attention. It's Angel Villaldo's fun and famous El Choclo, arranged by Dyens, who had a way of making you sound like a better musician than you really are, by virtue of his dynamic instructions. It's almost like cheating! Still a couple of glitches to work out, but this is as good as it will get in the short term.

Wow!  This is awesome, Sam.  Thanks for sneaking it in.

I wish we would have some Tonebase lessons and training that explore more deeply the Dyens approach and repertoire.

that's a fun piece and you played it very nice with good rhythm. I have not heard this piece for a long time but I have a wood cut hanging in my living rooms that's titled "el choclo" and shows two tango dancers in La Boca. It was made by friend from Argentina. Your video brought me back some nice memories of her. Thanks a lot.
