WEEK TWO Updates: Main Thread - Where the magic continues!

Alright, welcome to WEEK TWO of the Main Thread for this challenge! 💪

Why is this thread necessary?

Well, with the initial main thread turning into a 500-post behemoth (😵), it became hard to navigate.

This comes at the very end of Week 2. Therefore, very soon, I'll be making a different thread for Week 3! We're almost there, folks, just two more days to go until Week 3! 😎

But Mircea - I hear you say - can we still post in the old thread?

Yes, of course! Feel free to reply to others in the old thread to your heart's content. Just make sure you post any new updates (whether text or video) in this thread instead.

"Oh no, I didn't see this thread, so I posted a new update in the old thread!"

No problem at all! Just tag me (@Mircea) and I'll move your post 😎 These admin powers I got here are actually pretty cool! It turns out I can move individual replies between threads.

Where is the Week 1 thread?

Please use the following format when commenting (feel free to copy & paste!):

  • Etude you worked on:
  • One thing you found easy:
  • One thing you found difficult:
  • (Optional): a video of you performing it!

Sample daily update:

  • Etude you worked on: No. 1
  • One thing you found easy: The polyphony between bass and treble flowed very naturally, I had an easy time playing each line like it belonged to its own voice.
  • One thing you found difficult: I had a hard time creating enough variety throughout the repeated measures.

Feel free to make these updates as short or long as you wish!

Giuseppe Gasparini Dear Giuseppe, may you tell me how to insert the video-player into this forum ? I copied the Youtube-link and pasted it into my posting. When clicking on it, youtube opens in a different window. How did you made this ? Thank you.

      Best Regards

    • Olli try using «Link» from the toolbar instead of «Add video» at the bottom?

Been trying to post a recording of number 13 which I edited on my laptop. Unfortunately the laptop kept crashing so I couldn't upload it. Will try again tomorrow. I've also been working on numbers 4 and 14. Both fairly easy but require a bit of practice to play through smoothly.

  • Today I read through studies 4,5 and 6

4 is difficult to maintain the counterpoint in measure 5 because of the big stretch between c and f#. Otherwise it’s easy to read

5 I struggled with the rhythm and what I mean is the way Sor wrote this one doesn’t feel as symmetrical as the others. For instance 3 measures from the end I kept forgetting to repeat the c-e chord for some reason. Easy part is the consistent 16note rhythm and most of the double stops

6 is difficult because of chord changes from mm 5 to 6. Those changes are still difficult for me after quite a few years

David Chidsey Dear David, I also found Etude 5 very strange 🤪, but then I did this: made the bows always above two bars (12,34,56 etc.) and played only the bass-melodie .... now it wasn`t weird to my ears anymore 😂 now it`s cool music 😍... also heard this guy playing the piece:

      https://open.spotify.com/track/3cRyPJAS8BqO920SJ0kdlG?si=houcldSXSyma5SEE9BcpLw

Keep on rocking 🖖... ( I will upload my Etude 5 soon - by the way, I spend the whole night messing up with recording hard/software - I want to improve the quality of video and audio, at the moment it sounds very thin and poor, but I don't wan`t ( and honestly can not !!!  🙄 ) invest too much money in new Computer or Handy Equipment..... the Problem: video was always faster than the audio - it took me half the night  to find out the problem. What Hillbilly created the button "deactivate MacOS Vsync" in OpenBroadcastSoftware ? 🙈

No it works - I only have to eliminate the poorly played notes ...

      Best Regards

      Olli

    No3

    easy: sight reading

difficult: tricky ornaments bars14-15 and then 18-19...a few cycles round these needed to get them smooth

  • I just read through study number 8.  It's a really lovely Rondo.  It's fairly easy to read but you have to be careful on the part that shifts up to the 7th fret B natural.  As in many of these For studies there is some difficulty in the right hand fingering as well.  I'd make more recordings but I've been frustrated with my equipment and the sound in my office.  Still working on it.  The iPhone camera is quite good but I'm working on a better space

Hers's my recording of no 13. Recorded in my entrance hall thought it might sound better :-) . I messed up the last few bars and then messed up either there or somewhere else every other attempt so I then re recorded just the last 8 bars and spliced the audio (not the video) together so there is a join in there. It was mainly easy but just the middle section is a bit tricky alternating the thumb between the fifth and the third string

I've also been looking at number 18 this morning which seems a nice piece and quite straightforward. It's in the Frederick Noad Classical Guitar book so I sight read it from there using his fingerings.
