Increase Legato Playing in Both Hands in Two Weeks with TY!

Every instrument has its limitations and weaknesses. Playing legato is one of the hardest things to master on the guitar. Every note is so fragile: if your right hand accidentally touches the string or your left hand leaves the string in-between notes, the note will be stopped. Let’s explore and discuss the techniques and experiences on the details of how to maintain the notes with your left hand clean shifting, shifting motion, fingertip motion, exercises, and right hand training processes of free strokes for perfect legato playing.

    Hello Legato Buddies!

Sorry for the sound quality. There is renovation going on in my house so you can hear banging in the background and also road noise because it's warm and I have the window open.

Here is my first pass at the exercises for this week. Things I noticed:

Exercise 1 - after seeing the video I see I should have allowed my fingers to bounce back to relaxing position after the release.

Exercise 2 - I will not try going to the 6th string either - lol

Exercise 3 - I think the 3rd finger is the most difficult to release straight up and not squeak.

Carcassi #1 - This is one of my daily warm ups so it was great to re-examine it to make sure none of the notes are ringing out further than they should. The big challenges were:

Measure 3 - the first E on the 4th string. Even muting directly on the string with my RH thumb creates an overtone E harmonic so I had to mute 6,5,4 with the RH thumb to stop that.

Measure 4 - the last eighth note D. I had two choices. The first to mute with my left hand or do a rest stroke on the G in the next measure with a finger. I chose the latter because it seemed the easiest and least cumbersome. Even though the D rings out over the low G it's just for a split second and doesn't bother me. Let me know if it bothers you      😁

Debbie Love how you followed the instructions to practice! And you have patience with great steady rhythm!! Try more third joint movements instead of second joint movements on the right hand I M A fingers.

One of the best spider! Ring finger stay a bit longer before leaving if possible!

Shifting is so clean and relaxed! You could try faster now! and maybe use thumb P to play the bass strings!

Amazing Carcassi! The slight over ringing D does not bothering me!! It is so clean! I love this performance, the last fast one especially! Keep going after the first 10 measures Debbie! So great!

Hello TY! Thank you for your wonderful feedback! I'm sorry I haven't been active since posting my original video. My house is going through a renovation and is behind schedule so everything is crazy here. I haven't even had the time to practice. It's a great intensive! I'm so bummed I haven't had the chance to engage further. Thanks again for everything!

peter hancock I will have a video talk about the first exercise, the right hand position! I will record tomorrow!

Spider: first fingering is 4,1, not 1,4, try to reverse that and everything is good! The key is to connect each string by itself, so let fingers to stay on their spot much longer if possible! Try that and ask me if you have questions! In the video, the fingers left about one beat early in general.

Very great left hand, every finger lands on the fingertip, so great! Try to press the finger tips towards the right end of each fret, not in the middle of a fret. Sounds very clean!

Down shifting sometime index finger could be more careful!

      Thank you!

TY Zhang I noticed that I tend to pull the string "low E" when doing the shift. Any why I can reduce that or eliminate it?

peter hancock Hi dear Peter! Thank you! The Carcassi some fourth string F are F sharps. Overall pretty legato. Let's try to improve by using metronome about 80 one beat per note, for example. And really connect every movement cleanly with no gap. Try to relax the non-working muscles when playing with metronome. When we play without speed, our hands tend to be more tight.

      Thanks!

TY Zhang Will do. Your suggestions are fully applicated. You talk about "muting". I have very little ability for that.  Are there any tips you could recommend ?
