  • If I may offer a candid opinion, it would seem to me preferable to provide more than eight spots on the program, but to restrict individual performances either to a single piece only, or to a total length of perhaps four or five minutes, if more than one piece is played. I am not saying this on my own behalf, as I am in no rush to participate in these concerts, although I intend to eventually. But I don't think a 'first to the door' approach makes sense here. Within reason, any Tonebase member who wants to participate should be able to. We have at present at least one person who has asked to be on a 'waiting list' and two confirmed participants who have yet to indicate what they plan to perform. This strikes me as unfortunate. I don't think it would be difficult to tweak the system to accommodate everyone. As I said, just an opinion; I'd be glad to hear others!

David Krupka Thank you for your thoughts, we will keep that in mind for future iterations of the Community Concert! It does seem to become a very popular format and we surely want to include as many people as possible. We are not 100% sure if we want to restrict everybody to play only one piece, as the own experience usually changes quite drastically if you play more then one piece and get acquainted with the virtual stage, but then again there is a need to accommodate as many people as people without having a 3h concert! At the moment though, your approach does seem to be the easiest and fairest to implement!

    • David Krupka  I don't think a limit of one piece is the best way - maybe a time limit would be better. Also maybe for future concerts those that have played at the previous one are not allowed to sign up at the next one until those that haven't played are given the opportunity to sign up before the

    • Martin i habe just read the new inquietudes . I think that a succes of Tonebase should not become an issue.
the sense of getting use to play for others is the frequency, the repetition of the experience. If one can plays in Tonebase concerts twice a year, because of the long list…I am afraid it would be nice but not very helpful.  I suggest two pieces or three, because of the reason already mentioned, the experience says is better to be more engage with the stage. A limit of 5 min per person sounds for me very good. We could save time , leaving out the commentaries of how we felt, just to save time I mean. Is not possible to do two hours concert,  brief Martin introduction? at least 6-7  per hour could play. Also… to increase the frequency? Two rehearsals and two concerts each two months ? Let’s say one rehearsal and concert per month. Of course Tonebase should decide what is possible and better… but if the community has the inquietud…I can also leave my place for other person of course. But I have to say also that for me this activity of the community is extremely important. I am sure a good solution will be find

Derek I started a Google Document where we can quickly see who played in previous community concerts! I wouldn't change it for this concert now, but for next editions we can limit it to people who haven't played in the concert before!

  • I've read what David has written and if others want to play at the concert and it cannot increase the numbers, I agree to reduce my participation to one piece or to a predetermined duration (5 minutes?) and give space to others.

    • ivan paolo Hi Ivan. Just to be clear, I am not suggesting that the current program be changed (although perhaps it could be expanded). Rather, I hope that future Community Concerts will be organized in a manner that allows for greater participation, if this is what Tonebase members want. Obviously, there is some practical limit to how long these concerts can be, but I don't think we are at the point yet where that is an issue.

  • Blimey, I just found out about this, I had planned to participate too, but...

I read David Krupka 's post and agree with the sentiment, but I agree with Martin 's point that it drastically different playing more than one piece. Playing two pieces (or three shorter ones) is great.

I hated performing when I was much younger because it was always student concerts or little student festivals with one piece from each student; I was nervous for the whole time before playing, nervous for the whole time while playing and more because I inevitably messed up, and then hated it afterwards. But it was just part of being a musician so I went along with it. One day I had the chance to play several pieces, and later a concert, which let me settle in, noticed it was actually not such a bad experience.

TL;DR: I recommend two streams in close proximity to each other, or a waiting list or rota.

I would be more than happy to give my spot for the dress rehearsal + concert to someone else who need or want it more than me and I would be more than happy to participate as an audience member and concentrate in other activities. I'll ask Martin to look, according to the waiting list and the order of requests, and select who will fill my spot.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1GOejDJLrQfivsQt9KvAGK_BQYMUexrwVvSzFtAyKhFA/edit#gid=0

Of course we want as many people as possible be able to participate in these community events and still provide that real-life concert experience, meaning that people should be allowed to play more than one piece.

Please take to poll to tell me which guideline you would favor for the next editions:

    • Martin I enjoyed the concert and feel it's very beneficial to get this kind of practice playing "under stress".    I really enjoyed watching our other Tonebase friends perform. However, I did not feel relaxed (like playing just for myself in the practice room), and lost concentration at times, along with cold and sweaty hands.  I wish I could see a recording of this, to analyze it and to improve upon it...

Barney Playing in front of people changes everything, especially when you're the first one in a group (or the last one like Emma and Olli ). We don't record or publicly stream these community concerts (maybe we'll do that in a very special edition, but we'll warn everybody about it, haha), bur maybe you can screen capture it somehow for personal use?

    • Barney you played so well! It was a real pleasure to listen to you. I suppose it’s just never the same: to play on your own in the practice room or perform for an audience. And it should not be the same…. There’s always some extra tension, and that’s how it is. Just think (as Steve Goss mentioned) of the audience as the nicest people you know. They all love to listen to you, and a little mistake (or two) does not bother them the least, as long as you intend to play beautifully and  continue to take us along in your musical story. Which you did….

  • Hello Martin! I am a bit disappointed because I got to be distracted so easily! I should have been more focused to not allow that unexpected noises would get to me so badly. That must happen all the time in real life auditions, and I have to learn from it.  I had the piece under control at a slow tempo and my plan for the next two weeks is to practice it at the tempo I like in the concert plus correct a few mistakes I keep making.. That plus record it for my diary, that and the tremolo study. Thank you so much for the opportunity, and special thank you to all the audience who did not play but was there encouraging us.

Emma I loved the contrast between the calm piece and your temper with your kids to be honest, haha 🎉But it is true, a concert is full of distraction, one needs to really shield and immerse themselves into the music, that way you can enjoy it even when you're playing in a crowded restaurant! It's like the Jedi-Mindset of performers 🧙‍♂️A Pro-Tip: Try to practice it 20% faster, that way you can truly relax during your performance and know that you still have some headroom!

  • Hallo Martin. Yesterday I felt better than the last time. Even during the day I was less nervous that the last time. I have felt very good playing my first piece ,el Villancico, which in fact I had not really sure under my fingers. However run quite good , even with mistakes, I could enjoy playing it.

Unfortunately it was not the same with my favourite Preludio of Villalobos. The right hand began suddenly to shake...imposible to articulate rapid accords or the arpegio of the piu mosso or to stop the sound of chords ...etcetc. I would say was 50% down compare to the practice room. The good thing, and it is very important for me I think, is that I continue playing, I concentrated myself in how should sound and not in how was sounding. I will continue working in these two weeks specially in playing relax....I do not exactly what to do to control my autonomous nervous system...as said...it is autonomous! May be is a matter of confidence for jumping into the music to surf with the notes.

Nora Torres-Nagel Thank you for your feedback! I enjoyed both pieces very much!

The Prelude by Villa-Lobos can become quite tricky when the hands start shaking, but you managed so well! For the concert it is important to find these micro-spots of relaxation where you can reset your hand again and prevent a build-up of tension in your right hand! You can do it! 💃
