Look for beyond 12th fret studies

Hi friends,

I'm looking for practice beyond 12th fret on classical guitar.

I would like to find studies, routines or something else to improve this part of fretboard.

Do you know any resource or lesson on tonebase?

  • Hi Jesús,

The piece I play that most concentrates around and a little past the 12th fret is the first movement (also a part of the second) of La Catedral by Augustín Barrios. Not much of it happens beyond the 12th fret but it's something that helped me a lot to get more comfortable in that area of the fretboard.

I can't think of any specific studies but, I would typically start by taking existing simple melodies and studies and play them up the 8ve at fret 12. You can take what you already know, it helps to quickly get to grips with the notes up there, and easy melodies are preferred up here I think.

It’s good opportunity to write something you needed. Let’s don’t forget we can also compose music;-)

    Especially studies.
    Best regards!

Karol Thanks, I usually choose fragments that they are related to my study. Composing is away from me, at the moment. 😉

A straightforward warmup exercise is to play the Segovia scales, major and minor. The three octave ones will take you well past the twelfth fret. I run through these a few mornings a week.
Also, and depending on your skill level, many of Koshkin's pieces venture well above the twelfth fret.

  • There are some studies specifically for this in Aguado’s Nuevo Método para Guitarra, from around exercise 79 onwards.
