Storytelling on the Guitar: Brouwer’s Decameron Negro

Wed Aug 18 2021 at 11 AM PDT

Hey all! Back when I did the composition challenge I used some of Brouwer's music for examples, namely his El Decameron Negro.

After that, it was highly requested that I do a Live stream on that piece so, here we are with plenty of material to cover, how exciting! Here's what we'll be talking about:

How do players navigate programmatic music, especially in a piece as popular as Leo Brouwer’s El Decameron Negro? How do we use our hands and our experience learn how to tell the story in our own way? And finally, how do we avoid sacrificing playability to share our interpretation? Join me as I explore this great work based on Brouwer’s own memories of African folk tales recorded by German anthropologist Leo Frobenius. In this stream I will be sharing different considerations and ideas for how to explore it technically and musically.

See you there! 💃

P.S. Yes, that is me in the photo having a laugh with Maestro Brouwer.
