Week 2: Change of Colors🍂

As the air gets crisper and the days grow shorter, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the beauty and transition that autumn brings. We're excited to introduce our newest community challenge: "Music of the Fall"! This is your chance to explore pieces that capture the essence of this season – whether they evoke the feeling of change, a fresh beginning, or the quiet nostalgia of falling leaves.

🎯 What’s the Challenge?

Select a guitar piece that you personally associate with the change of seasons or the idea of starting anew. This could be a work that resonates with autumnal moods, melodies that conjure up images of falling leaves, or pieces that mark a new chapter in your musical journey.

🔖 Suggested Themes:

  • Transition: Pieces that reflect change or transformation.
  • New Beginnings: Works that symbolize starting something new, like a new season in life or music.
  • Autumnal Mood: Music that captures the essence of fall – perhaps something contemplative, warm, or even bittersweet.

⏰ Timeline:

  • Start: October 1st
  • End: October 30th

  • Another piece I was reading through that reflects the melancholy of the Fall season, by Marianne Vedral, a composer that I really like. Thank you for listening!

Blaise Laflamme Of course, I'm forgetting that Eric Phillips first contribution here has the very title I mentioned ('Autumn Leaves' - although I had the jazz standard in mind) so we already have a 'team hat trick'! Joking aside, I look forward to hearing whatever piece you choose to record.

Blaise Laflamme What strings are you trying out?

    • Debbie I used to like the Hannabach 815 for nylon strings and then this time I was using the 900 Silver 200 (with high-grade silver for the basses). On my spruce top the basses have great overtones and the overall sounds really great. In a previous video, «With You» from Carbajo, I was using the 825 Pure Gold Plated and they were awesome... I like both and find it hard to choose between both of them... last weekend I restrung with the 825! 😅

Blaise Laflamme I love Hannabach strings. I think they have really nice tone. But I've never tried the ones you mentioned. They sound expensive but probably well worth the investment when recording. Thanks, I'll have to give them a go some day!

    • Debbie I also think they're good for daily playing and according to them they last longer. For sure there's an improvement in playability and sound using both of them, I'll see when I'll get back to a set of 815 by how much different they are.

  • Shand - Inquietude Op 56 No 1

Like Blaise’ post above, this is a pretty intense and somber piece of music. I am not sure if it evokes Autumn, but if it does, it is certainly late Autumn, as it descends into Winter.

    • Eric Phillips Beautiful discovery Eric, this is definitely a somber mood, I particularly like the end section with the pedal and chord progression.

Eric Phillips Beautifully played Eric. It certainly reflects and autumn mood. I think the other 2 pieces in Op 56 would be good for spring and summer!

    • Eric Phillips Beautiful Eric. It is indeed very solemn, almost like a requiem. But beautifully played.

  • Ernest Shand - Inquiétude (Sorrow) Op 56 No 1

This time I tried to add more contrasts in dynamics and tone color. I'm not sure if I succeeded.

    • Eric Phillips I am not sure I can evaluate dynamics and tone but for sure this sounds very good to my novice ears. Well done Eric 👍
