I really like this one, sounds dreamy and peaceful, but I still don't know how to interpret the last 3 bars.

Dale Needles Is the accent you're referring to on this piece the underlinings of certain middle voice notes? I can't figure out a pattern. It seems like it's applied to the rising or falling middle voice but it's not entirely consistent, for example, in the first 3 measures, it's applied to the d, e, and f, then skips the g starting again with the g#. Any thoughts on this?

Steve Price Hi Steve, excellent question. There a few things going on in this little study, but from my perspective as a student of Carlevaro's, bringing out the middle voice is key which highlights one of Carlevaro's unique right hand techniques (toque #5) from his School of Guitar. He has placed accents where he wants this technique to be employed. For example, measure 1: d, e, f. Measure 3 & 4: g#, a, a# and b. Measure 8: b-flat, a and #a, Measure 9: e, f, g, Measure 10: d#, e, f and then repeated. Hope this helps.

I actually didn't know how to interpret this one, just tried my best to make it sound as musical and logical as I could imagine. No. 8 is even weirder...

Wai That was great, Wai! It's like three little bursts of energy in just 30 seconds. Well played. I don't know the music at all, but it sounded quite difficult to play.

Eric Phillips Thanks, Eric. It's easier than I thought actually because the left hand always stayed in one position. However, this kind of music was so new to me, so to imagine what it should sound like was not easy.

Wai The challenge of how to interpret these is pretty much what draws back me to this set frequently. The busy middle notes on this one are especially challenging for me, but you made them flow nicely and each phrase stood on its own.
The shortened first chord on the fourth line caught my ear since everything else is tenuto, but it punctuates the phrase nicely before returning with the original line.

Wai Very well done! I can really see your progress as you go through these Microestudios. My only suggestion for this study is to maybe add a little contrasting tone color. For example, in the second line when the pattern repeats, maybe play it more "claro." The same goes for line four with the repeated phrase. And, finally again in line six. As for the tempo, I might slow it down ever so slightly and save the speed for Microestudio #8. Also, for Microestudio #8, I would suggest playing it very animated and a bit freely. Keep up the great work. I am really enjoying your posts!

Steve Price Thank you, Steve. TBH, I think the "tenuto" part should be slower, but I didn't think too much about those markings when I was recording, I just played what I heard in my mind. I would like to try another take and try to slow it down a little bit.

It's not easy to vary tone color in a fast tempo piece, but let me try another take and see what happens.

Wai I don't play much modern music either. I was actually more into it in college. I always like trying to play very different types of music though.

Wai Great job, Wai. I see what you mean by 'tough', especially musically, though it seems you have a good feel for it. I think how you played it makes sense. The ending was perhaps a little shaky. Have you listened to Carlevaro or anyone else?
