Week 3: Waltzes and Whirls 💃🎵

Welcome to the Main Thread for the third week of "Song and Dance" practice challenge!

  1. Choose a piece that is inspired or transcribed from a song or a dance. It could be a lively south-american danza, a passionate tango, a serene romantic lied, or a poignant aria transcribed for the guitar. You're welcome to explore pieces from unfamiliar composers or challenge yourself with a complex work. 🎼

  2. Commit to daily practice and share your journey with the community. Aim to practice every day and upload at least two videos each week to illustrate your progress. This will not only help you stay committed and encouraged but will also allow you to share your musical voyage with our tonebase family. 🎥

  3. Share your favorite piece or recording that embodies the theme of "Song and Dance." Your submission will serve as an inspiration to others and create a vibrant pool of potential pieces for other members to delve into. 🎧

↓ Happy Sharing! ↓

  • Here is an early composition by Abel Carlevaro, most likely written in the early 1960s.  It is based on the rhythm of the milonga dance, famous in the Rio de la Plata region and is called Milongueando (milongering).

    • Dale Needles Nice, Dale. I don't remember seeing that on the page with his works, but it could have been because I was avoiding dropped-d tuning for a while. This is very cool.

Dale Needles This is really nice Dale! I don't know why, but it made me think of "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin. Nice bouncy rhythm.

    • Steve Pederson Thanks. Funny you say that about the "Entertainer."  I am working on another early Carlevaro piece that reminds me of Scott Joplin.   Hope to post next week.

  • Here is my latest take on Minuet in A minor - Johan Krieger.

Since the last recording I was able to speed up a bit the tempo.

I also bought IRIG audio interface and used it to connect my guitar directly to the phone for the recording. This eliminates all the background noise including metronome. 🎉

I still need to play around with the adjustments of the fishman preamp on the guitar to improve the sound but this is a good start.

Andre Bernier That was great, Andre. You have made a lot of progress in the last 2 weeks. Great job!

    • Andre Bernier what an improvement since your last version, far more confident and secure! 💪 I think you can raise up a bit your interface volume, it's a bit quiet.

Thanks for your comments. For the audio I am a bit stuck.

I am using the guitar Fishman preamp with the volume to maximum connected to an IRIG (audio interface - cheap one with no volume control). However, I tried this morning an online video volume booster and I think it helped a bit.

If you can recommend me another kind of Audio interface that I can buy on amazon and connect to an Android phone I would certainly try it.

    • Eric Phillips  Thanks Eric. This is much better than 2 weeks ago but I still feel I need to work on it a lot more to make it mode fluid and musical. The good thing is that I have a lot of time 😉

Andre Bernier I think you're doing a great job with the piece. Sounding lovely!

I'm not an Android guy, so unfortunately I don't have any advice for recording. 😥

    • Andre Bernier for sure the booster helped compared to your previous take. Which iRig do you have, like the iRig Pro has at least a volume knob? You could take a look at a better iRig or I think Zoom has released cheaper one like the AMS22 as compared to the HNXX.

Thanks Blaise, I started with the IRIG 2 which includes a volume knob but it was defective 😪

This recording was with IRIG 1 without any volume knob. This is working but having to do another manipulation of the video before posting on Youtube is not good.

I saw the Zoom AMS22 on Amazon and this certainly looks more professional. I am leaving for the weekend but I will place an order for early next week delivery. The good thing is that Amazon has a great return policy and process. 😉

    • Andre Bernier you're fast! But I never tried this device then I don't know it performs, but I suspect it would not be too bad. Another option, if you're in the iRig stuff, would be the iRig Pro or Pro Duo perhaps?

    Mompou Canción 10A

This is, perhaps, my final on this piece. I've started working on the corresponding dance. I think this version came out pretty well. I keep having little memory glitches but they only registered as pauses - so not too bad. I also noticed my guitar is slightly out of tune - probably from all the takes I have done today.

Dale Needles Thanks, Dale. Fortunately for me (since I have spent so much time with it just to get it this far) I have really developed an affection for this piece and it's corresponding Danza.

    • Jack Stewart that'a a beautiful piece of music and you're playing is great and fluid. About tuning, for myself I take no chance, I always retune between each take.

Eric Phillips Thanks Eric. It was actually transcribed by Mompou himself - though doesn't make it any easier.
