Emmanuel Sowicz: Parametric Phrasing - Direction Through Sound (Mar 19) Questions / Suggestions

My friends, I have a big announcement for all of you! 🤩🎉

Starting in April, my colleague, friend, fellow Royal Academy of Music graduate, and all-around inspiring musician Emmanuel Sowicz will now become a regular host and guest on tonebase Live events!

Emmanuel (or Manny, as I knew him at Academy) will be joining us not only for regular solo workshops, but also soon guest interviews and more! Please join me in giving a warm welcome to the newest member of tonebase Live family!

In this upcoming workshop, he will be talking to us about the very fascinating topic of phrasing and what parameters we have at our disposal for crafting it. In other words:

Parametric phrasing is a systematic approach to direction through sound. In this live workshop, Emmanuel will break down how we can understand phrasing through each individual parameter of sound: loudness (dynamics), duration (tempo, rubato, articulation), pitch (vibrato), and timbre (attack, colour).

Each one of these provides an opportunity to give direction to our music, in isolation, in combination, or in complex superpositions for unusual and often fascinating results. Through accessible musical examples by Sor and Tárrega, Emmanuel will demonstrate how this simple model can offer a wealth of possibilities for you to shape your music-making.

I think that these parameters gain different meanings from period to period in the history of music ......... in contemporary music they gain almost opposite meanings
Tz it was important to work one period at a time (I think tz is the intention of this master with the examples of romanticism - Sor and Tarrega that should be addressed)
I am very happy with the choice because this is one of the parts of the interpretation that I try to acquire the most knowledge and sometimes I ask the question, am I not going the wrong way?

  • I've been working hard on Sor's elegiaque fantasy. If you can give me some clues to improve my interpretation
      I'm grateful

So glad to hear you've enjoyed this, my friends! I've passed your great feedback onto Emmanuel, who will be handling these threads on his own from now on, whenever they relate to his livestreams! 😁
