Here is the next installment, Theme and Variations 1-6 from Ponce's last work, Variations on a Theme of Cabezón. All photos were taken in Burgos, the birthplace of Cabezón. Next week, I will work on the final movement, the Fughetta.

joosje Blaise Laflamme Eric Phillips Olli Steve Pederson Thanks all, it stills needs some polishing, but it is coming along. The fughetta is the most difficult, but none of the movements are too challenging. Just of matter of putting it all together.

Loves me some Tárrega!
Been working on this one for a LOOONG time as well. (Are we ever really "there"?)
I completely missed one note (high E) in the major section first time 'round. At least I slid into the right note! Maybe it will be a new interpretation...maybe not.

Steve Pederson What a beautiful piece! Your guitar tone is so sweet, I'm also using Cordoba, why can't I produce that kind of sweet tone...

Wai Thanks for the kind words! I listened to your Sanz Españoleta piece, and your tone is amazing. Which Cordoba are you using? a C10? C12? I think what may be effecting your perception of my tone is that I'm using a nice recording set up which I record with my computer and then treat with compression and reverb - at least for this song. In any case, I appreciate your comment!

Steve Pederson Mine is a C10. I always find that my tone is a little bit metallic, especially when playing the first string in high position. I know there are a lot of things that will affect tone production, like nails, strings & guitar, etc. But I think the main reason is I didn't practice enough.

Steve Pederson bravo Steve, well played and in control. I personally like the slide to the high E, without plucking it sounds like a portamento

José Ferrer – Cantilène Espagnole Op 41 No 1
Here’s one with a bit of Spanish flair to it.

Eric Phillips this Ferrer is has written nice little pieces. I didn’t know this composer, though read the name somewhere, I think. You get the Spanish sound .

- holding the guitar
- Things you found difficult:
- to decide how to play the repetitions and how to shape the whole piece musically

Great tone. What is the microphone you are using. Love the little guitar in the background. Looks like the mouse in the house forgot to put his instrument away after practicing.

Olli Great playing, Olli! You handled those fast scales so well. I like the variety and ornamentation on the repetitions. I had never heard this played with the repeat of the theme at the end like you did, and I think it works.

Richard M Levy Dear Richard, the "Mouse in the House"
... my room is in the basement and I need to put a mousetraps behind the couch, or they will eat my sweets and nuts over the night ...
Thank you for your kind words - I am using a pair of active ribbon microphones... they sound kind of old school and "dark"....but I like them very much....I think they cut everything over 15000HZ

Eric Phillips Dear Eric, thank you for you compliments, I really worked hard on this piece. It is a piece that is never finished.... Without repetition it is very short - so it needs repetitions to be used as a live piece... I am also wondering how much great music you posted in such a small time....one piece per day is really great and challenging......unfortunately you live too far away from middle Earth, Germany, Hessen, 63599 Biebergemünd........ -otherwise I would like to have Pizza and beers together with you while music talk
Best Regards

Olli That was very impressive, Olli. This is another piece from my 1st year of guitar (like the Milan Pavans) that I had inadvertently relegated to 'beginner piece'. I have since heard recordings that forced me have new respect for it. Your performance confirms that respect. Your handling of the repeats was masterful. Great job.
