New Challenge Ideas?

Hey Everyone! I'd like to propose that we begin another community-driven challenge while Martin is off on his family leave. This time, maybe we could have a more specific theme.

So, if you have a good idea, please reply here before Wednesday, April 2nd. Then, I will create a new discussion with all of the proposals listed, and people can vote until next Saturday, April 5th, when we can kick off the proposal with the most votes. Do you think that would work?

When making a proposal, please remember that it has to be something in which players of all levels can participate. Also, it should be something in which people can participate without necessarily having to purchase scores.

So, let's hear your ideas!

    I have two proposals myself:

    • Women composers (self-explanatory)
    • Studies - choose your own set of studies to work on by any composer

      Eric Phillips There are never too many studies. Good call. 

      Edit: I did some looking and realized female composers are seriously underrepresented in my collection so its probably a good idea at some point.

    Thanks for taking the lead on this, Eric! (Hard though it may be to believe, I do actually participate in these challenges - I just never manage to get to the point where I feel I am playing something well enough to video-record myself.) Just for the sake of providing some input, I'll suggest (in view of the season) something like 'Leap into Spring!'. (This would be the more cheerful counterpart of the 'Autumn' challenge of half-a-year ago.) Admittedly, it's not clear what music would fall into this category, although certain titles are indicative of the season - 'Vals de Primavera' by Barrios is one such example.

    great initiative again Eric!. I suggest the theme ‘Dance’. Be it bourree or bossa, gigue, jig or jota, sarabande shuffle or salsa…. Free style,  any level…. As long as it has the rhythm to dance.

    Thanks for taking the initiative, Eric. Some great ideas to choose from. Some of my favourite pieces are prelude and I've wanted to play a waltz for sometime (most of them are above my level). I really love Brouwer's studies and of course, Villa Lobos.

      Nijwm Bwiswmuthiary What you say about waltzes is not correct, Nijwm - there are dozens (possibly hundreds) that are well within your reach. Many of those composed in the early 19th century are indeed fairly easy. Even those by Tarrega are not particularly difficult. Though some of those composed in the 20th century are more challenging (I'm thinking of Barrios in particular) there are others (certain well-known ones by Antonio Lauro, for example) that I'm sure you could master. If what you want to play is a waltz, just go ahead and learn one!

      David Krupka Thank you for the information and encouragement. My knowledge about guitar repertoire is still pretty limited, especially of the different forms. As of now, Vals No.3 and 4 by Barrios are on my wishlist. I'll definitely explore the ones mentioned by you.

    I totally missed this new topic and Challenge. Does anyone know if it is possible to hook up the Tonebase forums with an RSS feed? It would be great to be notified when there is a new topic created in the forum.

      Marc Adler I'm afraid I have no idea what an RSS feed is, let alone if it is possible to hook up the TB forums with one. Sorry.

      Marc Adler I generally receive an email from ToneBase informing me that a new topic has been posted. (Mind you, I get so many emails from ToneBase that I tend not to look at any of them ...)

      Eric Phillips You probably used an RSS feed without knowing it if you ever subscribed to a blog using a reader like the old Google Reader or Inoreader. There are a ton of RSS readers out there. The trick is enabling the RSS feed feature in your community forum software.

      I don't know what software TB uses to power this forum. It might be a simple WordPress plugin, and that plugin might have an option to enable an RSS feed. I would assume that TB has some IT person who maintains this website.

      Eric Phillips Doing a little snooping at the source code of the webpage of this forum, it looks like the forum software is made by https://forumbee.com/.

      As per this link, ForumBee released RSS feed capabilities a year ago:

      Marc Adler So does that mean each person can activate this for him or herself? Or is it something a Team member has to do? If it needs a team member, maybe you could message or email one of them. It could then be passed on to an IT person at TB.

      Eric Phillips This is something that has to be done at the software level, usually by an administrator. It also depends on how the forum software is deployed. It could be an add-on that runs on Tonebase's server, or it could be on a cloud platform (what is known as PaaS or Platform as a Service). If it's on the cloud, then the odds are that Tonebase is running the latest forum software (one of the benefits of PaaS), and all they need to do to enable RSS feeds is to flip a switch in the admin panel. If TB is running an add-on, then TB might have to upgrade the add-on and then flip a switch. Again, if TB has an IT person who administers this site, then it should be relatively simple for them to enable the RSS capabilities.

    And let me follow up with my own suggestion for the challenge ... choose a piece that was composed after January 1, 2020. I would love to see some more modern compositions or composers represented.

      Marc Adler I do like the idea. It might be hard to find public domain scores, thus necessitating a purchase to participate. I'll be honest, I don't think I own anything that would apply.

      Eric Phillips You do 'own' a number of recent works - we all do in this community! I'm referring to the three sets of pieces commissioned by ToneBase over the past few years. (Assad's 'Sketches', Bjornsson's 'Landslog', and Koshkin's 'Progressive studies'.)
