New Challenge Ideas?

Hey Everyone! I'd like to propose that we begin another community-driven challenge while Martin is off on his family leave. This time, maybe we could have a more specific theme.

So, if you have a good idea, please reply here before Wednesday, April 2nd. Then, I will create a new discussion with all of the proposals listed, and people can vote until next Saturday, April 5th, when we can kick off the proposal with the most votes. Do you think that would work?

When making a proposal, please remember that it has to be something in which players of all levels can participate. Also, it should be something in which people can participate without necessarily having to purchase scores.

So, let's hear your ideas!

And let me follow up with my own suggestion for the challenge ... choose a piece that was composed after January 1, 2020. I would love to see some more modern compositions or composers represented.

David Krupka Nice call. I already played a Gulli piece that I commissioned from him last year. I have heard good things about Landslog.

Marc Adler Interesting to hear that you commissioned a work from Gulli! What sort of piece is it? Landslog is a set of eleven short pieces of increasing difficulty, the first few being quite easy and the final ones rather difficult. Well worth looking at! (I would provide a link - but I can't seem to find the ToneBase 'score library'. Is it just me, or has it disappeared?)

David Krupka I actually commissioned two works last year ... one from Gulli and the other from Andrew York. The Gulli piece that I commissioned is typical for him ... lots of arpeggios over the entire neck of the guitar. Very ethereal-sounding. The score is available for free, in case you want it.

The Andrew York piece is a substantial and advanced work that is a bit beyond my capabilities. It had its world premiere a few weeks ago. Here is the link:

Marc Adler That's a lovely tribute to your late cousin (if I understand correctly), Marc! And it was a nice surprise to see Rick Lord as the performer - as you probably know, Rick has been a regular contributor to this forum, although we have not heard from him lately. He's certainly a very fine guitarist! Has the piece by Gulli also been recorded? (I see that the score is available at his website.)

David Krupka Thanks for the sentiments. Rick really did an amazing job on the piece. Rick told me that there were definitely some challenging parts. I would like to see more guitarists play this piece. It's a bit different from the other stuff that York writes.

I recorded the Gulli piece, but I am notoriously self-critical, and I don't like publishing videos of myself playing guitar. But you can feel free to download and play the Gulli piece.

    • Marc Adler Oh it's you the York commissioned work beautifully played by our Tonebase friend Rick Lord! That was a beautiful tribute, and you mention about others playing the piece, I remember after watching the video looking after the score and I was unable to find it, can you point me out where to get it? I'm a big fan of York music.

    • Marc Adler Most of what I play is modern so I would enjoy this.

I recently bought the piece you commissioned from Gulli. Very nice and a great tribute. I'm a big fan of Gullis, and I've worked up a few of his pieces from Landslog and his Londrangar. Some of my favorites to play and I'm looking forward to working on yours.

I would be interested in modern music (after 1900 - a bit wider range than Marc Adler's suggestion, which I do like but it is harder to search out such recent compositions).

Though I should mention that I am still struggling to get my selection for the previous (current?) challenge recorded.
