I posted an arrangement of Bach's famous chorale prelude BWV 645 Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme ("sleepers awake") exactly 2 weeks ago in the piano challenge and my idea had been to do the same piece on guitar and got the David Russell arrangement only to realize it was way too hard for my current level and I didn't have enough time to practice.

I decided to post at least the first theme as I worked on it all week but it's a tough a piece for me.  It's a lovely arrangement, though, and there are some great performances on yt.  I put a capo on the 1st fret so it matches the same key as the piano version.

I was so glad to discover tonebase this year and looking forward to another year of learning and sharing with everyone

    🎄Happy Holidays and new year!🎄

Eric Phillips Thanks Eric, I know I wouldn't feel motivated to practice as much without the community here and a "goal/deadline" set with the challenges.  I'm still amazed at how you find the time to post so many videos but I always enjoy them and appreciate your comments.  Merry Christmas to you and your family and looking forward to 2022.

Brett Gilbert Woooow, that sounds so beautiful! And I just compared it with the version you uploaded in the Piano Community as well, feel free to share that here, too! It's fantastic to hear both submissions in comparison!!

thanks Martin I was inspired to work on this by your video a few weeks ago of the David Russell arrangement of Jesu... just didn't realize how hard it was! The piano version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pY1eybtvDok

      Brett Gilbert

Congratulations on the job done. The piece is challenging. Playing with short nails is not easy but I like the sound it can makes. I suggest trying to "enter" a little deeper "between the strings" with the fingers and articulate the movement of the fingers from the knuckles (and not from the last phalanx by looking for the string with your fingernail.)

      Happy Holidays

Thank you ivan paolo , I appreciate the advice and have enjoyed your videos of the Roland Dyans piece .  Nails are always a challenge for me when switching between 2 instruments and I've always struggled to get nice tone from short nails.  I'll give your suggestions a try!

    • Brett Gilbert Unbelievable, Brett! Are you improvising some of the embellishment? Your musicianship is so outstanding!

Eric Phillips Wow, thanks!  I'm pretty much following the arrangement which is by pianist/composer Ferruccio Busoni from the late-Romantic period who is especially well-known for Bach transcriptions, the most famous and my favorite being his transcription of the Bach Chaconne!  Playing a transcription of the Chaconne on guitar is one of my very long-term/way-in-the-future goals.

    • Brett Gilbert Well Busoni certainly wrote a beautiful arrangement. I know some don't like "romanticizing" Bach (or other earlier composers), but I think it's wonderful. I honestly cannot imagine Bach only wanting his music frozen in one time period. If he had somehow lived into the romantic era, he certainly would have written his music like this.

  • This morning I have sent a video, but it is any where now! I will send it again.

I was saying, it is of the Villancico again. Still needs a lot of work in memory, digitation, interpretation ans last but not least I should not forget to tone the 6th cord in D !!!

I will continue working on it in the diary. I want to play it in our next concert 😉.

    See you all tomorrow !!
