WEEK THREE Updates: Main Thread - Where the magic triumphs!

Hellooo, everyone, and welcome to WEEK THREE - the final Main Thread for this challenge! 🤩

Why is this thread necessary?

Because the Week 1 and Week 2 threads are now both officially monstrously long 😀 And navigating them can get tricky with the lack of multiple page display.

But Mircea - I hear you say - can we still post in the old thread?

Yes, of course! Feel free to reply to others in the old thread to your heart's content. Just make sure you post any new updates (whether text or video) in this thread instead.

"Oh no, I didn't see this thread, so I posted a new update in the old thread!"

No problem at all! Just tag me (@Mircea) and I'll move your post 😎 These admin powers I got here are actually pretty cool! It turns out I can move individual replies between threads.

Where are the Week 1 and Week 2 threads?

Find the Week 1 thread here! And Week 2 here!

  • Etude you worked on:
  • One thing you found easy:
  • One thing you found difficult:
  • (Optional): a video of you performing it!

Sample daily update:

  • Etude you worked on: No. 1
  • One thing you found easy: The polyphony between bass and treble flowed very naturally, I had an easy time playing each line like it belonged to its own voice.
  • One thing you found difficult: I had a hard time creating enough variety throughout the repeated measures.

Feel free to make these updates as short or long as you wish!

Olli Nice, Olli. I hope that I will find some time to record it this evening or tomorrow, too.

Blaise Laflamme yes, the Pizza was a birthday present - I love Pizza 😉. The tempo is slow, much slower than other recordings. If played much faster the bars 18, 19 + 20 would turn my whole recording to trash 😂

I am working 24 alternated with 14. 1I was quite advanced in number 14 when I started metronome drilling the 24, which is doing well in a tempo that does not make justice to the piece, yet...

Easy for 24, possibly the arpeggio but at the start of the 3rd part is inverted, so it is easy to fail. I suppose the reading is easy too

Difficult: it is long, so difficult to make a recording with no mistakes. A especially difficult measure for me is number 28, the end of the second part. It a good exercise for arpeggios and very beautiful

number 14, it is quite straight forward, very rhythmical like a military march. Something that was easy the postures, difficult as I strived to mute the notes respecting the silences.

    • Emma See what you mean. 24 is a very rewarding piece to study.  I think metronome speed is not so important as long as you keep the flow. Yes,  that bar 29-30  (inversion) was giving me the creeps when recording. At the endings (16, 28) you can slow down a bit. ( which I didn’t do enough - recording stress 😉
study 14, you all mention a military march. Yes, it is a march-llike piece, but I don’t think military. It can be quite calm and melodic, imo.

looking forward to your interpretation of both....👍

Emma Now with the video. I am not satisfied, but my challenge would not be complete if I don't send a recording. Also, in a few weeks I will be able to check it and compare...

Emma Emma, thanks a lot for submitting this one. It is such a beautiful piece! Well played, and - as for all of us who try to further improve the playing and develop these pieces within the next couple of days/weeks - it would be interesting to compare and hear progress (and even recording itself is a kind of extra challenge...). Well done! I plan definitely to play this piece, too.

Mircea So this suggestion or request is for Mircea: I hope that this thread will not be closed today after the watch party. Maybe we can have a 4th thread where we can further submit our op. 35 videos for exchanging our ideas and listening to each other. "After the challenge is before the challenge" or "The challenge is not over yet...". And later, you can announce a new Etude Challenge (for example, Sor op. 44 or 60...). This challenge was so much fun and it was so inspiring, so motivating, and in addition I think it is helpful for building up this community. Tonebase is so great. I became a (lifetime) member and was grateful and happy even before the live stuff started here, but the live part is such an extreme extra-bombastic-super-on-top-thing... wow! Thank you so much!!!

Etude I worked on this week: No. 13

One thing I found easy: the right hand arpeggio pattern.

One thing I found difficult: m. 27 starting with the G#dim7 chord until m. 31 - making those transitions smooth.

    • Debbie great recording. Great sound. All these difficult transitions... sound smooth and look easy... congratulations.
